Another figure painting from Angel Academy, done from life. In the class of "Maestro", we use a different style/method pretty much everytime time, and I love it.

Size is about 110x60 cm. Took several days to paint.
I used Winsor&Newton oil paints, and some by Old Holland.

I can't believe it! Just came back home from Italy to my parents' place in Germany, and there is my mom baking cookies! Berliner Brot, something between a biscotti and a brownie, and they're quite good. Even more so because she rarely ever bakes. Ah, the wonderful Christmastime!

The way you rendered the flesh is beautiful, especially in parts that require choice details such as that elbow, the place where the back slopes inward, and the face. The way you finished the background, interestingly, works very well. It almost seems like she had been ripped off of a larger painting.

Excellent job!

Really beautiful! Can I ask you something regarding oils? I recently decided I wanted to try them again, but Ive forgotten most of what I know about them. Ive been mainly using digital means, and watercolor for traditional painting. The reason I want to use oils aswell is mainly for the physical mixing of color, to get personal with them, in digital the process of learning about color feels very slow. So my question is for oil sketches what would be the best approach in your opinion? Gesso? linseed oil? lots of brushes? I just want to be able to mix the color tone or tint I want and put it down without hastle Learning a new medium can be frustrating when you lack information, I learned that last year when I started with watercolors! Haha that was a nightmare. Anyway hope you can get back to me. Thanks.

Your digital work is awesome, you've already got a ton of experience, it'll be easy for you to learn to use oil paints! The major difference is just that oil paint is harder to control - the color often doesn't look the way I thought it would, and painting wet-in-wet can easily produce mud.
I don't know how much you already know, so here's an important principle: [link]
Otherwise just approach oil painting like a digital work - start with the major shapes, keep it simple but as correct as possible, then go into refining and adding detail

Also, this forum is awesome & full of resources. [link]

thanks alot for the answer! hmm maybe I should just use acrylics for what im after, since I dont really care if it looks nice just as long as I learn from it. It would be nice to produce some nice looking paintings in oils though. Il have a look at those links and see! thanks again!

Your work on the skin is really beautiful and the background gives a nice 'window' on the woman ^^.
You have used Old Holland paints because there were other colors than Winsor&Newton or they have an other quality?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

KristinaGehrmann In reply to Lijah [2010-12-27 14:51:05 +0000 UTC]

Ah, I mainly use W&N and Old Holland because our teachers say so I'm not really aware of quality differences, they're both awesome! Just sometimes colors of two brands are different, even if they use the same pigment - for example, Old Holland cadmium orange is more reddish than that of W&N. I'm not sure about others.
