Disney doesn't shy away from killing child characters. We see them do it in Mulan(the doll in the destroyed village), even without showing the body.
I guess my mind blocked out the pup's death until I started re-reading the comic.
But holy shit.

Kala's son at the beginning of Tarzan is probably the closest Disney's ever come to an onscreen child death. I still remember being shocked by that.
And you're right; it's eventually going to be clarified in the comic, but Zira's pride did kill that hyena cub. That's probably all the more crushing to Shenzi.

You're right. He wanted to live and let live and just focus on fixing the Pride Lands, but Zira stood in his way and he had to banish her. In my mind, she only really wanted revenge on Simba, but she couldn't get that after she was banished, so she just settled for punishing the hyenas instead.Β

It doesn't matter how desperate they were to survive they did wrong and paid the price. Yes anyone would do the same, but not everyone is guilty of high treason.

Thank you! There's not going to be full-on humor for a little while since we still have to let the impact of the clan massacre settle, but I can think of a few lines coming up that can be seen as tongue-in-cheek/sarcastic/dark humor.
I feel like moments like this are why I decided to make Banzai the main hyena in this comic. There's way more of a chance of him losing his temper with Simba, which could ruin everything for the baby hyena cub.
