Banzai explains how he and Shenzi had to constantly stay on the move and on their guard after the massacre. Things get even more trying for them when Shenzi starts having nightmares.

That's going to become much more important later.

So question. In the second movie, Nuka says, '... Since the hyenas ran off' so some hyenas other than Banzai and Shenzi must've escaped for Nuka to know that. Maybe the ones who escaped Zira ended up in the thorns?

I can hear the song "Shadowland" playing in my head, the one from the Broadway version. That's apparently where the hyenas have been living in all their lives, paying for the sins of their ancestors, yet nobody wants to hear their side of the story, which would explain why their bitterness in not being part of the Pride Lands would consume them like that.

I'm actually not very familiar with the broadway musical, outside of references that I've heard other people make. I'll have to listen to some of those songs for more insight.

I'm hooked on this comic, the story's so well written to the point you can really feel for the characters and that's something I don't typically get from many comics, especially TLK-based ones. You deserve all the praise this gets and I'm keeping an eye out for more!

Oh my gosh, thank you so much for all of that! It's funny, because I feel like I didn't really have a grasp on Banzai's character until I started writing this, and now he's my favorite hyena of the three because of how relatable I found him to be. I'm glad that you're enjoying this comic so much, and there's definitely a lot more to come!

Yeah. It can be debated how much Shenzi and Banzai deserve what they're going through, (I don't think they deserve the grief from what Zira did to them at least), but Ed didn't know any better.

TheSupremeYeen [2020-04-16 02:24:35 +0000 UTC]

Damn... considering the context behind what's causing these nightmares for Shenzi, my best guess is it has something to do with the trauma surrounding her mind and the regret she endured due to losing so many; in a way, she's failed her mother, and led her clan to die. Which only gets worse when you realise how much of a burden she considers herself in her vulnerable state; She has a lot of mixed emotions - Rage, Anguish, and Sadness being the major factors, and hearing her whimper from the stress of convincing herself that she's to blame, and the fact that her own clan is shunning her in her mind, really separates the assumptions often placed onto her as a way of chastise. I've suffered how bad nightmares can be, and it isn't pleasant.

It can be a very heart wrenching time, trying to sleep, and only being greeted by more things to ruin your overall mood, and self-esteem. Banzai looks like he's trying his best to hold on, and that little headspin to check on Shenzi was a very cute way of showing that he cares for her mental health and wants her to be happy. It shows how affectionate he is towards her in times of grief and mourning. I really hope Shenzi can find her self-esteem again and move on, accepting its just how the circle of life is run.

Another good chapter. Sorry to cut this one short. Might send another one tomorrow. Its kind of late where I am, so farewell for now.

KRRouse In reply to TheSupremeYeen [2020-04-16 15:40:11 +0000 UTC]

Thank you very much again!

You're right about Shenzi's nightmares. It all goes back to that idea that hyenas try to suppress their pain to keep it from slowing them down. Shenzi has s very cold demeanor when she's awake, but it's just a coping mechanism. Her true feelings are coming out through her nightmares while she's asleep and can't do anything to hide them.

And while Banzai is definitely concerned about her, he's too caught up in his own fears and losses right now to be very helpful. There's nothing wrong with him being vulnerable, especially since he doesn't quite know what happened with Zira after she threw him over that cliff, but he needs to do more to reach Shenzi since she's in way worse shape emotionally.

Man. I know Shenzi did a lot of bad things in her day, but she doesn't deserve this.

πŸ‘: 1 ⏩: 2

KRRouse In reply to Noratcat [2020-04-16 14:35:43 +0000 UTC]

I can see both sides of the argument here. On one hand, Shenzi helped Scar take over because her people were living in squalor and she saw Mufasa's family as the cause of that. On the other hand, there may have been more peaceful ways to resolve that issue, but as someone who doesn't follow the Circle of Life, she didn't value other animals' lives very much in general. And of course, she let her own hate and ambitions blind her too, which happened again when she decided to stay and kill Scar instead of getting her clan to safety right away. She doesn't deserve the grief she's feeling from what Zira did to the clan, since that was just a petty act of revenge that was more about Simba than the hyenas, but Shenzi does have other things to atone for. What she also doesn't deserve is the lack of emotional support from Banzai.

NostalgicChills In reply to Noratcat [2020-04-16 10:45:50 +0000 UTC]

Mmmmm...she does a little. Just think of all the horrific trauma, sleepless nights and depression she caused Simba as a child, or even as an adult. She helped commit treason, murder, and attempted murder of a cub on two separate occasions. Simba had just lost his father in a horrifying event, and then Shenzi and her clan gleefully try to kill him with no remorse or second thought. This is essentially Karma at its finest.Β

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 2

Disneycow82 In reply to NostalgicChills [2020-04-24 01:52:49 +0000 UTC]

That's mostly on Scar though, even though Shenzi and her two companions did take part in that, regardless of what their situation was long ago before and after during Mufasa's reign.

NostalgicChills In reply to Disneycow82 [2020-04-24 03:04:17 +0000 UTC]

If you taunt and gleefully chase after a child to brutally murder them by your own hand...you're screwed up in the head and have some serious issues with morality - no matter what your circumstances are; or who put you up to it!Β

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Disneycow82 In reply to NostalgicChills [2020-04-24 03:44:07 +0000 UTC]

You got a point there. Even if the hyenas do have their side of the story nobody has heard yet, it doesn't excuse them helping Scar take over the pride lands and turning it into a wasteland after believing his empty promises of endless food and water.

KRRouse In reply to NostalgicChills [2020-04-16 14:51:24 +0000 UTC]

I gave a longer reply to the original comment, but the short version is that I see both sides of this argument. Shenzi didn't deserve what Zira did to her or the clan (which was revenge for her NOT killing someone, ironically) but being stuck in the Graveyard again with all her power gone is a more fitting sentence for what she did in the movie.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

NostalgicChills In reply to KRRouse [2020-04-17 01:30:46 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, but the only reason she didn't kill Simba as a child is because she couldn't catch him, not out of any remorse or sympathy. She helped destroy his life completely, and she helped end Mufasa's life in a very brutal way. Simba had to live his entire adolescence with the traumas she helped induce, so now she has to deal with the same. Simba had everything taken from him, so now Shenzi has had everything (except Banzai) taken from her - what goes around comes around.
She had no real power at PrideRock, Scar hogged it all. They were still starving near the end of it just the same as they were in the Graveyard. To have her return to the norm; is a little lenient given her crimes in my opinion. I like Shenzi as a character, but it is hard for me to feel sorry for her.Β

Great comic, btw!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

KRRouse In reply to NostalgicChills [2020-04-17 06:25:46 +0000 UTC]

It's hard for me to discuss topics like this too in-depth without getting into spoilers for the comic, so I'll just say for now that those are good points.

I wouldn't say though that Shenzi went back to the norm after fleeing the Pride Lands. A lot of her clan died during the battle, and food was probably even more scarce in the Elephant Graveyard afterwards (if only because Scar wasn't around to bring them any more), so it was definitely a step down from before. I guess it wasn't power that Shenzi had with Scar so much as privilege and pride, since she got to think of herself as the clan leader who brought her people back into the Pride Lands. But yeah, she's definitely dealing with some Karmic justice right now.

And thank you very much! I'm glad you're enjoying the comic so far.
