Vitani reveals that she and Nuka were the ones who first discovered the hyenas in the Elephant Graveyard after Zira's pride was banished from the Pride Lands. Their mother apparently lied to them about what happened to the hyenas after that -- hence Nuka's comment in TLK 2 that the clan "ran off." Then he scares Vitani with his hyena impression and gets a vertebrae to the head as payback.

I figure Zira wouldn't tell Nuka the truth about what she did to the hyenas because she figures he can't keep a secret, and she just decided to tell Vitani and eventually Kovu the same cover story to keep things simple.
