Description Here's a rather quick painting I did for iRO's Halloween loading screen contest;  the theme was the different ways to celebrate the day of the dead, so I decided to use something from my own country's tradition, mixed up with RO's universe. In Poland, we light special votive candles and place them on our loved ones' graves. On the All Saints' Day evening especially, each cemetery is just brimming with the glow of hundreds of lights - it's an absolutely stunning and magical sight. I figured that in Midgard, Horongs, Gajomarts and Lichterns could provide the lights and colors, to make for an ever more mystical display.

I didn't have a lot of time to dedicate to working on this picture, so I opted for trying out a rougher, more painterly style. All in all, I'm pretty happy with it - and I got in the top 5, too!

thank you! <3 it's not really a 'fun' occasion for us - unlike the cheery, celebratory atmosphere of halloween, it has a much more of a solemn and contemplative one. what we do during this day is visit our passed friends and family, bringing lights and flowers to the graves as a way of showing rememberance. it's always a pretty sad and melancholic moment to visit graves, but on the 1st of november, with all those lights, it becomes a very special experience. here's some photos i found that really get the atmosphere across: img1.garnek.pl/a.garnek.pl/003… i.iplsc.com/cmentarz-wawrzysze… ro.com.pl/wp-content/uploads/2… sprzataniegrobow.radom.pl/_BLO…

honestly, i always envied the countries that celebrate halloween! while with years, i've grown to like our own specific holiday, halloween just sounds so... fun. dressing up in a costume, going trick or treating, all those haunted houses and spooky parties...! there just aren't enough happy holidays like this in the year, if you ask me! i know celebrating halloween is slooooowly gaining tract here, too, but many people are very much against honouring a foreign, pagan holiday. back when i was in middle school, we had halloween as a themed day to be organized for our english grade, and while the other students loved it, many teachers would grumble or snide at us for it. :') 'why dont you make a day for all saints' ' ... BECAUSE IT'S A SERIOUS HOLIDAY FOR SERIOUS THINGS AND NOT AN OCCASION TO DRESS UP AND SELL THEMED COOKIES, DAMMIT.

aaah i see :0 in my country we celebrate halloween with the party and candy stuff, but we mainly celebrate the all saint's day with flowers and what not. i honestly don't know much aside from the capital of how many traditions there are in my country surrounding these days, so sometimes seeing other celebrations tends to impress me a lot (i guess i have a tendency to assume everything is fun, ahaha) those pics have special and really sad feeling though :c

aaah though i can tell you for experience that sometimes trick or treat isn't as fun ; _ ; as mentioned above, chile has set this day to be more of a religious day and sometimes i wish it was kept that way? i feel my country has lost its traditional charm to mimic the usa, i'm making no sense at this point ;; AND I AGREE VERY MUCH WITH THE LAST PART. making the all saints' day as something to party sounds wrong to me, given that it's a really serious holiday so its just... no.
