okay from getting so many comments about this i thought i better put this up to address it. i said realistically but i did not say realism. not fully. i based it on realism but i did not want something like a photo-realistic drawing i wanted it to have an "artsty" sort of feeling and not a photograph. so i did not shade it AS smooth as a photo-realistic drawing would have. i did that on purpose.

i worked hard on this.. it's probably the first person i've ever drawn realistically. Not so great... but i tried.. hope you like.. please do not bash it.

Thank you so much *gltvisualart for letting me use "Secret" ( [link] )

please message me and get my permission before you use this

I think the individual features are good, just try not to use lines to define the eyes, or at least gradate them outward so as to appear more like a shadow. That's the huge secret to realism, no lines at all. Another trick to make the eyes stand out is to add a tiny pinpoint of light, generally on the pupil or overlapping onto the iris, on the side of the eye where the light is.
My only other advise, to make the shading smoother, is to try cross-hatching. This basically means that you shade very, very lightly in one direction, and then in another direction, and another until you get the value you want. By constantly switching the direction of the shading and adding layers, it will blend more easily and won't have any streaks. If you do end up with streaks, you can usually get rid of them by blending in the opposide direction - like if the streaks go up and down, blend from left to right or right to left. And as I said in the other picture, good quality pencils make a huge difference in the final product. Good quality paper also makes a difference - I don't know the technicalities, but generally drawing paper has a "weight" in pounds, and the greater the weight, the better the quality. I generally use 70-90lb paper.

If this is a first attempt at realism, then you have amazing potential. If you use those tips next time, I don't think it would look like a second try at all, but like a highly experienced artist! I really enjoyed your work and I hope I wasn't too harsh.

thank you and no but one thing was i wasnt fully trying to FULLY get the effect of realism i wanted it mostly but i wanted a slightly drawing/sketch look so i didnt fully shade it all. i liked it mostly. the paper i don't have much control over. i just get what my mom gets lol. i dont have money lol. as to the pencils i agree to the most part but i also think its the way you use them normally i can't use the amazing quality pencils (partially money and partially the way i hold my pencil and use it) i just use mechanical pencils lol. i can sometimes. but i rather the mechanical pencils. i agree with your critique but certain things i wanted the way it was. but that helps me a lot when i try to get better on full realism pieces.

beautiful. love the expression of the eyes, and the intricacy of the mask.

the nose, where the mask shadow hits it, looks vaguely odd. (this may just be me.) and the mouth, if that's what I'm seeing through the mask's left eyehole, should not be visible.

well done, tho, especially for a first time drawing realism, in that little time. keep it up with the realistic drawings!

wow! really beautiful! I love the feeling of mystery ^^

I have a suggestion though... use a normal pencil when shading of smudge more ^^ more realistic!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

KtSeery In reply to Faerie-s [2007-07-07 19:41:05 +0000 UTC]

that is a normal pencil >.> i just didn't use the blender that much. i kinda like the rough-ish look.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Faerie-s In reply to KtSeery [2007-07-07 20:01:24 +0000 UTC]

By normal I mean not mechanicl ^^ it said mecanicl in your description

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

KtSeery In reply to Faerie-s [2007-07-07 20:04:56 +0000 UTC]

yeah but that has the same lead that would be in a normal pencil. it would do the same thing. i just needed to blend it more using like a tissue or blender stick or something. mechanical and normal had nothing to do with it. or at least not the way i use it. i guess it could.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Faerie-s In reply to KtSeery [2007-07-07 20:16:23 +0000 UTC]

I know you used a normal lead ^^

What I mean is the point... the point must not be really sharp when shading...
