Description "Lewa is here. But he will not save us.

The great Toa is the same in body, strength and in speed. But his mind is gone. He has been attacked by the Makuta and enslaved by evil. His Great Mask of Power has been replaced with an infected mask and the only way to bring him back is to take it off. And I know of nothing with the strength to overcome him."

Waah, this is so cool! The first thing that really strikes me is how dynamic and intense the pose is; like a predatory cat about to strike, or a scorpion ready to lash out at lightning speed!

And, that anatomy...man, I struggle with human anatomy already, but Bionicle anatomy? Phew, forget it... I have to say you really nailed it, though, and with such a pose, too!

The colors, perspective, and shading are all good, too! Great job, man! β˜†yβ˜†

Huh, you're right, it's not. I guess it just looked like that to me since the pose doesn't show the weird 90-degree turn the "wrist" makes.

Building off of what I just said in your last piece, let me point out how this piece improves upon stance but falls prey to shading issues again.

This would be the prime example of one of your darker pieces that I like so much - there's such a dramatic mood to the shadows here, it just seems to fuel the moment...too bad Lewa doesn't benefit from any of it. The only parts that are shaded properly are his right arm, the axe handle, the gear on his back and his right shoulder piece. Every other part of him suffers from a "blandening," where the heavy cast shadows that would have made him so much more sinister are lacking. His legs and the axe blade seem to be unnaturally pulled or curved to our right in order to catch the amount of lighting you've given them, instead of being at the the angles you drew them at. (His left arm seems to pull upward instead.) His right foot in particular is far too bright, given that the spotlight is on the other side of his body. Darker shadows are better - see how dark the shadow is on his mask but his face seems much more brightly lit? You also need to be more mindful of cast shadows - his left leg would cast some form of shadow on his foot at that angle, and yet it seems to receiving light through his leg. Shading is definitely your biggest weak spot.

On the other hand, his pose couldn't be stronger. The way his legs are stretched apart, one back and to the left, the other forward to the right, create a very stable foundation for the rest of his body. Speaking of which, his body is bent forward so that his center of gravity is precisely between the two, meaning that he is perfectly balanced. Even his arms are counterpoint to each other. Excellent!

Lewa was always my favorite of the Mata. His upbeat personality was such a relief from all the otherwise overtly serious or mild-mannered Toa. Nowadays I miss Kopaka's deep-rooted but externally subtle emotion, but Lewa will always have a special place in my heart. (Love the quote by the way!)

Now, two questions for you - how do you shade your artwork? I remember you used to take a black layer and lower the opacity to achieve the effect. If you're still doing that, I would strongly suggest trying out multiply-style layers, as they allow a much freer range of shading contrast within a single layer.

Also, how are you getting the tags under your deviations? I realize I haven't posted anything new in a year, but I can't find anything like that in the submission form...

Kumata In reply to Azophel [2015-06-08 08:29:11 +0000 UTC]

The problem with exploring more elaborate poses is it makes it much easier for me to fail at stuff like accurate lighting. Not to dismiss your critique or anything, I'm just saying it's a one step forward, two steps back scenario, and I feel that I'm going to make quite a few similar mistakes as I branch out. But you know what they say about omelettes and broken eggs.

As for your questions; I do a mixture of the black-opacity effect and overlay-style layers, but I will admit it's something I've not focused on developing much.Β The option to add tags should appear after you upload a file to be submitted, right under the text box where you write a description. I think you can even go back and edit tags onto your older deviations, should you feel the need.

Having issues shading isn't a bad predicament to be in. I'm the exact opposite - shading just seems natural to me, but I've completely distorted the forms before I even get to that stage. And it doesn't matter how well you can shade if you can't draw the base worth a darn, so you're ahead of me in that regard.

I forget... But in the comics, didn't the infection leave him with the ability to understand the two evil queens or something after??

Kumata In reply to skcolb [2015-06-08 08:08:06 +0000 UTC]

Correct, but it wasn't from this infection... it was from a Krana. Lewa had a bit of a tendency to get mind-controlled back in those days
