There's a lot of deviations on the front page that I check out just so I can read the comments.A lot of users seem to think they can define what is art and what isn't, and this never fails to infuriate me.
Have these people ever been to any art galleries? A lot of popular modern art looks like it's been drawn by 5 year olds in 5 minutes, while classical art all looks exactly the same. Maybe they should go visit some museums and start shouting "not art, herp derp" until they get thrown out.
If stuff you don't like makes the front page, it means there's an audience for that sort of stuff, in which case you should be blaming DeviantArt's user base rather than insulting the artists. Funnily enough, unoriginal Pokemon and Pony crap doesn't get as much hate as a lot of nude stuff. I wonder why. (*coughpersonalinsecuritiescough*)
Wikipedia's definition of art is: "Art is the product or process of deliberately arranging items (often with symbolic significance) in a way that influences and affects one or more of the senses, emotions, and intellect. "
By that definition crap art is possibly the best art of all, because it makes people really mad!
But this meaning is too vague for my liking, and it's horribly subjective, since everyone can feel differently about a given work of art.
Keeping in mind that a lot of people believe in a God of some kind, pretty much /everything/ could be considered art since it was deliberately created by Her.
On the other hand, DeviantArt's definition of art is: "Everything that's on this site and doesn't break the rules."
I like this one since it's simple.
Anyway, as far as I'm concerned, I don't think anyone on here has any right to complain about what is art and what isn't.
Anyone who does is just looking for an excuse to be an asshole.

I hate crap that tries to define "artistic merit", it's especially maddening that some censorship laws in the US are based on such a useless, subjective thing, but that's another issue.

ah..........okay......well all i can say that and even history proves....is that art can even be a toilet seat....so yeah Kupo-sama i feel your rage to these kinds of comments...so far on these three months i'm here i got some favs and stuff but i don't really know if my art is good....i mean some people think but i still think a have a long road to go and you have all the right to feel angry about those comments....also you have made awesome games for kong but that's not the point.......i have a crappy art and i say...everything is art no matter how you chart it! if you doubt take a look yourself but my statement is set!

I like DA's stance on it too. "Everything that's on this site and doesn't break the rules." I can only judge what I feel is art, to me, to myself. Some girls take nude pics with their camera and call it art, while others understand the usage of light/angles whatever, and produce 5-star nude content. But I would never pretend I was an authority on the matter.

I really hate this topic. This applies to music too. "Blah blah blah isn't music because blah blah blah sucks!*guffaws*" I really hate certain genres of music but I will still consider it music. There are pieces I really dislike but I will respect the author's choices. In my opinion, it's like saying apples are not food because I hate fruit.
I see art as something too ineffable to define and simply try not to think too much about it.

i like to think of art as any creation that people can draw meaning from. even if it wasn't intended to portray certain meanings makes it even better because it shows an effect on it's audience. HOWEVER! the term "art" is a very loose and easily manipulated word.
take for instance "dadaism". basically art for the sake of art and wierd for the sake of wierd. SURE! the author could put alot of INTENSE MEANING AND SYMBOLISM into it, but if it only took them 30 seconds to come up with it then that's what i like to call a "cheap shot at art". anyone can call anything art but i think it really comes down to what the author intended. if it was a half-ass attempt at grabbing atention then sure it's art but it is a very cheap way of doing so.
tl:dr art has many different levels and not all art is equal. judge it for yourself and compare it to the author's work and intention.

One of my other friends on dA went into a big rant the other week about how most "Artistic Nudes" aren't really art (I have to agree with him, most of them don't look like art to me, especially when they're not actually nudes). But like you said, art's really just subjective, and means different things to different people. Still, who am I to judge other people's art when I myself can't draw for shit...

Me no jelly. Call me douche if you want but I just don't bother when I see "what-the-hell-is-this-art". By that I meant, plenty of anime/manga art, little pink ponies, horrible PHailD cosplays, etc. But I do wonder how did that particular trend got picked up, most especially My Little Ponies... I just live life and promptly switch pages when something was in the process of burning my eyes (eg: yaoi, yuri... *shudder* >_<)...

OOh this is relevant to my interests...
So I had this big drunk discussion on college once. imo everything, EVERYTHING is art. No matter what it is, an argument can be made claiming artistry. Then the point is that there's only good art and bad art, and its up to the person experiencing said art to decide how good or how bad it is. Now in an ideal world everyone has their own opinion and sharing one's opinions are supposed to lead to wonderful discussions and riveting dialogues about the merits and shortcomings of any piece of art. Unfortunately in the world we live in, and the internet we hang out in, that rarely happens, instead we prefer getting into arguments with people who don't share out points of view under a blissful veil or anonymity.
And yeah, I am super jelly that my crap doesn't get to the front page.

You know I usually don't stop to read most of your journal entries, but this one interested me.
Yea, I'm one of the few who makes MLP vectors and gets tons of pageviews for it, so I'm always wary of someone calling me out for it. Even I don't consider myself to be talented because of it. Hopefully I can get better to being able to make my own stuff that people would like even if it didn't involve a fandom to it.

Calling Pokemon and MLP stuff on frontpage "unoriginal crap" basically implies that you think that it is not art and/or doesn't deserve to be on frontpage. Which is extremely ironic considering you just said everything in FP is there because there's an audience for it.
And even though it's pointless that people complain about what they think is or is not art, they're gonna keep doing it, and we have to deal with it. But honestly, thousands people starve to death each day, and what bothers us is other people's opinion on what shouldn't be on the frontpage of a website? That makes me feel both extremely grateful and sad.

I disagree with wikipedia's definition.
Art is a cultural form of expression of human beings; a dereivated consequence of life experiences. I consider a dick in a wall art, screenshots are art, amvs, art. There's no such thing as good or bad art, only art that is more appealing or less to some people or some other and that's defined by cultural limits and parameters.
It's a broad definition, i'm aware, but so is art.
What confuses people is the usage of the word art as an adjective that denotes something supreme, amazing, masterfull, divine, etc wich puts art as a noun in a pedestal not of it's own.

Art exist in everything and can be anything. Art is opinionated for humans since we all have our own taste and likings. Thatβs how I always saw it. I guess you would have to ask the cave men since they were to first to create art on wall, they drew what they saw and what came to them in their imagination.
