changed it back, I changed my mind and have had a good, hard think about the direction I want my style to go in.
the sta.sh file is now the updated one, you can have a look there. Both are on my blog anyway.

hey guys! I was playing around a little with this piece and decided to change it... I was always really fond of this one but felt like it lacked a bit of impact.

I used GIMP painter which is a version of GIMP that comes with something called the 'mixer brush' which allows you to blend colours similar to other programs like paint tool SAI and Painter. I only used the default round brush, and changed the hardness/spacing for a crisper stroke.

I don't know why, but... I prefere the old version. The current one is more realistic for sure, with big great effect on light and all these things, but the other one was more colorfull, with more drawing-like style. For me the first version was more poetic, and you know how much I love this drawing (my favourite on your complete gallery

I thought there might be somebody (or even a number of people) who would prefer the old to the new, and that doesn't bother me at all! It makes me really happy to hear that you appreciate my artwork anyway.
I can definitely see the differences in style and honestly I think it's a reflection of the way my style is changing based on my preferences and the direction I'd like to push my style in.

Ooooo~! Sunset pretties! ~
I actually like both versions. In the first version, I loved how all the details of her costume were very prominent, and it gave her this jewel-like crystalline feel that really brought forth her regal air. In this second version, she is completely encompassed by her beautiful surroundings, and that gorgeous back-lighting on her diminishes some of the shine of the previous details. And by doing so, it makes this version a much more intimate one in the sense that she now feels very human - she's no longer just the princess/queen, but rather a young girl (who just happens to be of royal status) who feels the same happiness, sorrows, and desires as you or I. It's a very powerful transformation, and I love how your two versions show us both sides of the character. Brilliantly done, kuri!
I watched your speedpaint too, and wow! You are quite the master painter! Every stroke is drawn with such confidence and purpose. I still can't believe you did this in only 3 hours. You're so talented~!

I certainly dulled much of the the golden opulence in version two, but at the same time I wanted to frame her girlish, feminine shape with powerful light to infer her capabilities and her potential instead of keeping the focus on her royal character design.
It's extremely easy to forget how young Ashe is! She's only nineteen and simply -has- to keep it together, so great are her responsibilities. I find the intimacy important to relay since I find it often gets lost in representations of Ashe. Undoubtedly, she's equipped with a precocious fortitude but I like to imagine there is a still a sense of youth that hasn't been dulled in her personality, but tucked away to make room for her worldly priorities.
I think there are rare moments where the girl instead of the princess is revealed - in subtle insecurities and hesitations, through her frustration and exasperations (with Vaan's immaturity, for example) not to mention her headstrong but naive determination.
Oops I went on a bit of a tangent! I think of Ashe a lot though, so I'm happy I have reached someone with what I've tried to communicate in my piece.

Haha, that's quite alright, I don't mind tangents. I think everyone has a character or two from a game, a movie, an anime, or a book that they absolutely adore and can relate to or find inspiration from, and I can tell Ashe is one such character that is very close to your heart.

The reason is I don't have a lot of control when it comes to drawing with the tablet pen (painting is a lot easier) so I just find that it suits me better to block in the character's shape with colours rather than attempt to sketch it normally. Blobbing in shapes is less taxing than trying to define them with lines.
It depends on the person I guess - I might find it easier than sketching with lines, but another person may find that the lack of detail in the blocked shapes is a bit daunting since a lot of the detail is found in the stage where you do the lineart. (It's not strictly lineart for me, just a relatively neat sketch. I don't have the patience for real lineart!)
