Description Okay, first I DID NOT MAKE THIS!

Second, I'd like to formally introduce you all to the new pride and joy of my limited kimono collection (yes, limited, I only actually have 1 other professionally made kimono - I don't really consider the ones I make myself as kimono because I'm still learning what I'm doing).

I recently got paid for a few things and decided to buy myself a graduation present. So, I got something I'd been pining for, for a looooooong time; a geisha's hikizuri. That's right, this baby once belonged to an actual geisha. It'll probably be a while until it comes in the mail, though.

I've been researching the crest trying to find out which okiya this kimono previously belonged to. I've figured out that the crest is tsuta "ivy", but I've yet to discover which okiya the crest belongs to. In my research, however, I have managed to find these on flickr:

The first one shows a very junior maiko from behind. She's wearing an obi with the exact same crest on it as the one on my hikizuri. This means she's from the same okiya. The second photo shows the same maiko from the front. This gives me a clear image of her face. So, if I can use her photo to figure out her name, finding her okiya becomes relatively easy. The photo title indicates that she is in fact a Kyoto maiko. By translating the words on the paper lanterns I've discovered that she works in the Miyagawa-cho hanamachi.

If anyone has any information about her it would be greatly appreciated!

Anyways, thank you to a new friend "Cortana" who just commissioned me for a whole lot of kanzashi, I couldn't have afforded this beauty without you! Heh heh, you and me - two addicts supporting each other's habits! XD

And now I can give up ebay and Ichiroya for a good long while. Except when it comes to getting kanzashi supplies. I can't find those anywhere else and those actually earn back their purchase price.

The maiko in the above image has been identified as Fumisono-san from Miyagawacho. She is now a Geiko, and is part of the Yoshifumi Okiya. Thank you for sharing these lovely images!

Ooooooh by the way, I don't know if you saw this one or not, but Ichiroya has an AMAZING dragon hikizuri for sale ($1800 USD, cripes!) [link]

Oh yeah, I saw that one when it was first posted. Then I looked at mine and realised that for the price I paid I got an awesome deal - cause I like mine better! XP I found this awesome obi on yahoo japan to go with it, but it's almost as much as the kimono - so I really don't know if I can afford it... The person I bought the kimono from, though has the exact same obi on his website for more than twice the price of the one on Yahoo Japan, though.

In regards to obis... if Ryu-Japan doesn't have any good ones on ebay, then keep stalking ichiroya XD

And this would go PERFECT:

You find the BEST ones! Dare I ask the final price? XD The most i've paid yet was... $90 for a kimono in my collection (i'm cheap lol)

I'm cheap too, but I have expensive tastes. XD

You have no idea how hard it was for me to push the add to cart button on this thing. I think I was obsessing about it for more than a week. The final price with the shipping and all came out to about $500 US. Bye bye tax-return. And now off to work so I can afford an equally stunning obi! LOL

HA! nice tax return o.o Mine was like... $80 and even I thought that was a lot XD I think a black obi to off-set the white would look nice. Black with gold obviously

Wow!! It's so pretty! That's also totally amazing that it was owned by an okiya. It must have been expensive. I hope someday I'll be able to afford to buy a kimono too. I guess making my wannabe kimonos is gonna have to do for now.

Well, as far as geisha kimono go, this one was actually rather cheap given its immaculate condition. I've seen ones in this condition go for as much as 3 times what I paid for this.

Thank you! I so happy! *dances* I'm hoping I can get it here by the end of May so that I can *maybe* wear it to Anime North, but I'm not sure because it's white and the floor in the convention centre tends to get really dirty.

I wouldn't think of wearing any of the expensive kimono to cons... O_o People might step on them and all. For me they're preserved for photoshoots.

Well, if I did wear it to a con I'd have it bustled up the entire time. I wouldn't let the hem touch the floor at all!

its so cool how there are still geisha and okiyas around in japan...arthur golden makes it sound like it was so long ago.

Kurokami-Kanzashi In reply to shadowsongII [2007-04-21 19:12:57 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, the pattern is super rare too. Dragons usually only appear on men's clothing - they're quite uncommon on women's clothing. I think I've only ever seen one other dragon hikizuri and it was covered in massive stains.

Arthur Golden makes a lot of things untrue seem real. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the book and the movie - but not for the information they supplied (some of it is a little faulty) and the movie only serves to create even more errors.
