I have always had a soft spot for chinchou and his evolution, and is under the category of pokemon i wanna just hugs to rather than battle with

In Pokemon ruby I named mine Glowfish, made him my surfer, and took him all the way to elite four

The background here is impressive! I can't do backdrops for squat. Any tips?

Contrasting colors so that your character pops out, balancing your background and foreground, and always using subtle but effective highlights. But again, i rarely do backgrounds myself, so i am not much of an authority
