Hope you like characters along with a story; more on that later.

This charming filly is Feather Star. She is what's known as a Fractal Mare. Fractal mares are born with a single stripe down their backs. When they reach adulthood, they empathically bond with their mates, forming their thoughts and their coats to best attract their mates. As suggested, the stripe grows and changes color over time like a fractal. At this point in time, Feather’s coat is still in the beginning stages of growing. By the time she is done growing, she’ll be a very striking creature… that is… if her coat will ever stop changing.

Feather Star's story:

It is a God-given freedom, stolen at such an early age. In most unicorn cultures, mares are typically given the freedom of choice; who to marry, what to do, where to go, who to associate with. All these simple freedoms were stolen from Feather Star the moment she was born. Most fractal mares are either the first or second born, not Feather, though, she was #5. In most cases where fractal mares are born, they are respected as objects of great beauty. In most cases, the fractal mare has the freedom to chose their mates, and are given many luxuries… not Feather! Having four older siblings left her in a world of abusive jealousy. During her first tender years, she was subjected to random acts of violence, as her older sisters constantly berated her. Her father, too, in his own jealousy, kept her visitations to outsiders strictly guarded. Any attempt at muster her own individuality was met with stern repercussions. This lasted until her adolescents, when she was bigger and stronger, and more capable of defending herself. Despite this edge, she was still not free. Her father kept her hidden, and her sisters – in her recent assertion of character – wanted her dead.

Finally, when Feather reached adulthood she was freed of her family’s jealous terror, but at some great cost. She was betrothed and forced to marry a unicorn prince upon her age of ascension. Feather had no idea who this stallion was, nor was she impressed with his display of affection. However, still being a fractal mare, her empathic bond grew. Her coat started to change color and the fractal art graced her body.

Unfortunately, Feather was thoroughly introduced to the world of heartache, when a band of marauding orcs dropped in. These beasties were emissaries of a warlord, who was nothing more than a gangster, and this tribe of unicorns were under his authority. One of the leaders, saw Feather, and fell in love with her colors. As a price, this tribe had to give up the fractal mare as payment. The prince stallion, being the coward he was, gave up Feather.

For the next two years, Feather Star was kept as amusement for the orc war lord. Aside from her colorful coat, which was now fading in her mate’s departure, she served as a court reporter for them – being that unicorns have the power to detect lies. When it was time to collect on debts, and peasants claimed they “had no more to give,” Feather would be the seer in to things otherwise. Of course, she would protest to her role, but was beaten. Finally, using her powers of charm and empathy, she conned her keeper to let down his guard, and she escaped. At last free, she ran as far as she could from her former captors.

To her surprise, some weeks later, her former mate found her. Feather was angered beyond words at his betrayal, yet in her loneliness she was glad to have been found. This prince, after all, was still her mate. After a few days of charming, and pleading, Feather found it in her heart to forgive him; her empathic bond with him was hard to break after all. But no sooner had she taken him back, and they ran away together, Feather Star finds herself right back in the hands of her orcish captors. Her prince betrayed her again!

This time, it took four years of charming and observation before Feather spotted a weakness in her master’s dungeon and was able to escape again. This time she kept on running.

Having come so far, in a new land, with no one to guide her, she was lost. She had no idea where to go or who to trust. It’s about this time, that she meets up with Chase. Her fractal coat gone, and her feelings shattered, she receives him with utter distrust… considering her background, can you really blame her?! Of course, she is lonely, and has a need to belong. Hopefully this Chase stallion can provide that. She is a shy and very bashful creature around him, but with her empathic bond growing again, her coat is asserting is fractal art again. So long as Chase’s heart is for her, Feather’s coat will always be changing, never repeating the same pattern twice. And Feather Star’s empathic bond will alert her to Chase’s needs.

Uh... sure... how would I go about doing that? Better yet, why don't you do it, since this character and background were part of competition to add to someone else story arch.

Wow! I love it! Despite my two entries, this makes me hope a little that Chase chooses her. It's very well written and captures your attention. Good job on both the story and the picture. The colors are beautiful.
