The subtle golden square glows invitingly behind a veil of transparent black that flows into the blue grey below. A mysterious window in the darkness. The secrets of the womb beyond the curtain of this world.

This feels like evidence of instinct, knowing there is significance in something that is not readily explainable. As significant as a Egyptian hieroglyph, and in many ways, vastly more interesting.

oooooo! it just sucks me right in! the sort of scratch-like lines? were they made with a graphite pencil--is that what you mean? or was the graphite used to add shading and the marks come from something else. enquiring minds want to know. sorry, i'm a bit odd at this time of day, or any other, really.

i don't suppose you mean motor oil when you say oil... hahah! but you know, that's really what comes to mind when i'm looking at this. it looks like, if one was to pick it up, one would get very dirty.

dirty can be a really good thing. take that as you will.

the fine lines are actually brush strokes in the underlying layer of paint, used graphite stick over the top.

oil is oil paint, a very small amount, though I did do a small painting many years ago mixing motor oil with a clear polyurethane sealant... took a few months to dry.

appreciate your comments, many thanks for the as well.

it's subtle and i find the media unusual, it makes me want to try them. was it on quite thick paper? i can imagine the paint being quite heavy on the paper.

as a matter of fact the paper was rather thick, but the paint really doesn't weigh it down very much... the piece itself is actually rather small.

well photos of two dimensional artwork especially, as there is no reference to scale... I'll eventually add the size to the comments section.

it depends if the size of the piece contributes to the piece, just like including its surroundings in the photo (then it'd become a representation of an installation i guess)
heh i should too!
