Description
A pirate costume I did for the renaissance fair this year... I hated the blond wig (it is cheap and was itchy!), but it looked okay with the costume.
The hat was a fun find at a county fair up in Anchorage Alaska a couple years ago, and I added some feathers to it to brighten it up a little. It's some type of velvety material that looks a bit like leather from a distance if the light strikes it right. Very comfortable!
The wig was a cheap Halloween store thing but it was just fake enough to look the part of a pirate wench LOL... I hated it but it looked better than me in my own hair which tends not to curl the way the wig did.
The white chemise shirt was purchased from someone as a kind of hand-me-down item from their own Renaissance costume collection. You can't see it in the picture obviously, but the chemise goes down to my knees and would fit me and about 2 more people my size. It was HUGE. I let out the drawstrings in it so it fell off my shoulders and put black leather bracers that I made over the ends and fluffed up the sleeves. I especially like how that part turned out. Pirates can definitely wear leather bracers!!
There is a brown leather waist cincher that is barely visible in this picture. It wasn't made by me, but I can make one just like it. I was rushing to get this costume put together, and it came free with the chemise so I couldn't turn it down. I'm gonna make a black one though so the costume is more color-coordinated. The cincher helped bring the skirts and the chemise together without being too abrupt.
The burgandy skirt is made of a gauzy type material, also purchased from the person who sold me the chemise from her old Ren costume collection. She suggested I layer skirts, which is where I got the idea to put it over the black skirt. That one is actually an bridal petticoat meant to be worn underneath a gown and not really seen, but I bought it for another costume that I am working on and thought it spiced up the pirate costume a lot. I have to say it was the coolest thing about the entire outfit. It really made the white and burgandy stand out and brought the hat back into the whole thing. The color scheme is somewhat dark (except for the chemise shirt of course), but elegant and very comfortable to wear!
I had leather knee high, fold-over-at-the-top pirate boots on underneath but the skirt was long enough that only the toes really ever showed. I couldn't see wearing high heel shoes out in the dirt at the Ren faire, haha!
Thanks to my sister Grace for taking the picture! I may retake pictures in this costume in a place that is more appropriate for a pirate to be rather than in my living room. I'm debating a different wig for it too... hmm.
