I'm already a big fan of Peg + Cat on PBSkids. Besides being about math and existing in a world of grid-paper, one thing I really like about it is the humor. The show is aware of itself, and they don't wait to reference absurdities for laughs. "'-and you must be their parrot!' 'Awwk! And you're wearing a wool hat despite the fact it's hot out. What's up with that?'" The pacing is another great thing. Where other kids shows go so slow that they're dumbed down feeling, Peg + Cat often has its best moments in rapid-fire dialog between characters.Related content

Wow, I like this design of Cat better than his real design! I don't watch Peg Plus Cat all that much, not my favorite show, although sometimes I like it when goes
"I AM TOTALLY FREAKING OUT!!!" And then the wind instrument blows as Cat tugs on Peg's clothing, and then puts his paws up at her as the whistle blows.
"Cat's Right," says Peg,"I should count backwards from (whatever number)"

Easily The Highlight Zone Problem. However, favorite song has to go to the "You can count on me" song from The Tree Problem. That line "I'm the one two three for you" was a moment I had to ask myself what level this show was even ON, because it's clearly a higher one than a LOT of other shows.

Oh yeah! That's another great aspect of the show. The fact that it is technically formula driven, but that they play around enough with it to make episodes stand out from one another and keep things fresh and interesting. Their flexibility is another example of the creators genuinely having fun with the show, and not just hammering out something from a predefined list of tropes.

Just saw it today. The show is cute and awesome. Yet why do they have very complex calculus equations in the background if the show teaches you simple math

That's one of my favorite aspects of the show. I guess I see it as showing kids what they will someday be able to do. It doesn't anchor itself in the humble harbor of that simple math; it acknowledges that there is so much more out there than what you're learning from the characters. It instills a curiosity for what that all means, and how it's connected to, say, The Pyramid Problem. All of this goes hand in hand with the pacing in doing something I LOVE to see in kids shows: They don't assume the audience are idiots. So many shows slow everything down and take too tiny of steps. Peg + Cat blazes through its math at refreshingly normal speed, showcases the possibilities of the subject etched across the skies, and brings itself back down to earth by being delightfully aware of itself and its absurdities.
