Thank you! And yes, this specific location kills me with the shadows. I've yet to get a shot of this place with properly exposed shadows. The issue I run into is that the center of the gorge has a partly open canopy and lets in a lot of light, while the overhanging rocks obviously cut out the light on the sides. I need to visit again when the sun isn't so bright.

Yeah, you kind of have to use a blended or HDR shot for places like this since the dynamic range of the camera is not extensive enough to expose for highlights and shadows appropriately in one shot. Do you shoot in RAW? Depending on the lighting, shooting one RAW file may be enough to bring up the shadows and recover the highlights.
