Description My 1973 Ford Gran Torino sedan "Sexxy 73" that I have been working on getting back on the road for the better part of a year, and I can finally say that she will now rejoin the world of driving! The problem with my Torino was that she came from a different province and here the gov't hates anything not from Alberta, so for the past nine months I've been working with mechanics and friends to get her legal for Albertan roads. Restoration will hopefully begin soon and she'll be looking better than new with some new suede shoes (gold steelies with dog dish hubcaps).

Photographed in Sylvan Lake, Alberta.

Is that a dent next to the headlight or a reflection?

It's a dent, previous owner told me someone she knew drove into a tree with the car by accident.

What's the big deal about cars from out of province? Emissions, licensing? In the US, that's not much of a problem except for California, due to emissions rules. But that's mostly for older cars. Most new cars sold in the US conform to California standards from the factory.

It's weird, it seems to be mainly (or at least the worst) here in Alberta. It's really about safety, as every car older than 12 years old needs to have an inspection for licensing and insurance reasons, but they usually will let minor things like small leaks or windshield cracks and rust go unless it's a hazard or causes serious problems. Here in Alberta, out of province inspections are beyond strict, the first registered shop wanted to fix every little problem from a small crack in one of my taillights (on the corner, not even noticeable) to taking out my engine to "search for the leak inside" (which was actually the transmission oil pan's gasket that dry rotted). In all honesty it's a really pointless inspection that causes problems most of the time for even good cars, and I'm pretty sure it's just a way to make money over anything else.

You're probably right. I've seen cars in worse shape here in New Jersey with valid inspection stickers. But then again, due to the state cutbacks, they only check a few things, like emissions, brakes and a few other things.Β
