Ary entered into the clean, modern office to see Danni sitting at an empty desk.

“Ary.” She said dryly. “I’m glad you made it.” Ary stepped in, but there were no chairs. If Danni was surprised by Ary’s new physique, she wasn’t letting on. Ary did her best to hide her disappointment.

“I’m sorry to call you in today, Ary. I know how much you enjoy working from home.” She leaned back in her chair and stared down her nose at the fat woman across from her.

“I can come in every once in a while as long as you don’t make me do any work.” Ary joked.

“That won’t be a problem.” Danni responded. Again not making any real acknowledgment. “Ms. Ary I track the social media of our employees extensively. You don’t post much about yourself. Mostly music and your own photography, but your girlfriend made a post on your timeline the other day when you moved in together. Just a quick post and a photo of the two of you.”

She paused, and Ary didn’t respond. She had been hoping for a promotion, but this didn’t feel like one. After a moment Danni continued, “Ary, Adephagia Publishing prides itself on being the voice of a younger generation, and we strive to represent that in our workforce. When we hired you, you seemed like such a catch. Young, talented, counter culture--you’re a lesbian for christ sake!”

Ary sneered. “I’m missing the point here I think.”

“Do you know what our top article was yesterday?” Danni asked, undeterred. “‘Top 10 gluten free meals you can make at home’. Before that it was ‘15 diet secrets your doctor doesn’t want you to know about’.” Ary was starting to catch on, her hands balled into fists. “We just don’t feel that you represent our company values anymore.”

“You’re firing me?” Ary asked.

“What? Hardly! We’re removing your picture from the website. You have far too much talent to be removed completely. Just don’t try putting your work here on a resume, we’ll deny involvement with you. You have to understand, a business like this has a very delicate image to protect.” Ary was speechless she stood dumbstruck for a moment before Danni continued.

“On the note of your work here, I have your next assignment.” She pulled a large box from under the table. “It’s for an article I’m working on personally. I need each of these props photographed and then brought back here. Understood?”

“You can’t just… disown me like this.” Ary said, her voice emotional but level.

“We just did, if you want to keep receiving a paycheck, I suggest you take your box and get out.”
