Description
My stomach rumbled loudly. I clapped a hand onto it quickly, hoping I hadn't woken my friend who slept across the room from me. Wondering why I was so bloody hungry right now, I returned to my homework. However, that quickly got boring so I turned to facebook to remedy this. My best friend Avery was on so I started a conversation with her.
As we talked, I jumped back and forth between homework and instant messaging Avery. She was telling me that she was going to lick my face the next time I saw her when I realized I had a headache. I barely even registered her comment for I suddenly felt dizzy.
After making tea and taking some pain medication, I still didn't feel very well. The dizziness hadn't subsided and my stomach hurt. Just to make conversation with Avery, I said that my head hurt, not really knowing why I had said that until she asked me why it hurt. Then it occurred to me that it was because I had not eaten anything since lunch – and I had not had breakfast before this. Tears filled my eyes as this realization settled in. Then came the anger.
I shot a glare towards my sleeping friend across the room. He had told me I would have to wait until morning. He had been the one too fucking lazy to just make me food! In fact, I would have made it myself if he would have let me, but since it was his dorm, Austin made all the rules. Austin was such an asshole.
Avery yelled at me to eat something, but I told her I couldn't because I was still at Austin's dorm. I sure as hell wasn't gonna raid his fridge. He had three other roommates and none of them marked their food so there was no way to determine what was his or theirs. Of course, she continued to come up with plans to get me fed, but none of them would work. They all included waking him up which I felt badly about no matter how pissed off I was at Austin.
The threat of tears spilled over, becoming much more than a threat. I cursed under my breath. I had been wearing black eyeliner and hated getting it all smudged up on my face. Placing my computer on the floor, I headed out to the sink just outside his room. I looked at myself pitifully in the mirror. Why hadn't I just eaten more of that stupid cinnamon cake when I had the chance? My stomach rumbled loudly again as a wave of dizzying nausea washed over me.
"Hey," I heard a voice behind me. "Are you crying?"
I did not recognize this voice so I turned away and said, "No," with a pathetic sniffle.
A hand lightly grasped my shoulder so that I would have to look at this new face. I was met by light blue eyes hidden behind glasses. Disheveled long topaz-colored hair hung around his shoulders. His blue pajama bottoms already looked wrinkled and slept in. His bare chest caught my attention in an instant, but the concern in his eyes brought it elsewhere. "Liar," he said, lightly wiping a tear from my cheek. "What's wrong?"
"Nothing," I said. "It's stupid…"
"Nothing?" he questioned. "I don't know many girls who cry over nothing."
"Are you joking?" This was unbelievable. "Girls cry over nothing all the time!"
"But I don't think you're one of them," he said softly. He gently tilted my head up to meet his eyes again for I had looked away. "What's wrong?"
More tears flowed from me at this statement. It was rare for someone to care for me like this. I wasn't used to this kind of attention so that made me cry even more. "It's stupid," I said again. "You're going to think I'm some spoiled little princess."
"Try me." That intense blue gaze willed me to tell him, but I tried not to.
After a short inner battle, his blue eyes won out, and I told him, "I'm hungry."
The hint of a smile touched the corners of his lips. "Then eat something."
"I can't."
His brow creased. "Why not?"
"I can't just steal Austin's food!" I whined.
"Why didn't he offer you any?" With this question, I could see that he was truly puzzled by this.
"I don't know…" I grumbled at the same time as my stomach did.
He chuckled a little, mostly to himself it seemed. "All right." He took my hand and dragged me into the kitchen. "I'm going to make you something to eat. What do you like?"
"Y-you don't have to—" I protested.
He glance over his shoulder to smile at me. "I want to."
That smile nearly sent me to my knees. "O…kay," I sighed.
"My name is Cody,by the way," he said as he threw open cupboards.
"Rylee," I said, sitting down at the kitchen table.
Cody stopped his search briefly to hold out a hand to me. With blush creeping into my cheeks, I shook his hand. "Nice to meet you Rylee," he said, grinning. "Now! What would you like to eat?"
"Um…what do you have?"
"I have frozen waffles, eggs, canned stuff… uh… mac-n-cheese—"
"Don't go any farther!" I commanded. "Mac-n-cheese is my favorite food in the world…currently."
He laughed. "You too? Man, I just can't get enough of this stuff."
I giggled. "Me either."
Cody smiled hugely as he pulled out Austin's pot to cook it in. Either he was happy to have made me laugh or just mischievously using Austin's pot to get back at him, I wasn't sure, but it didn't matter. I still got to see his gorgeous smile.
While the water boiled, he came and sat beside me at the table. "So," he began conversationally, "how did Austin get you to the point of tears over hunger?"
I sighed. "Well, we went out to lunch with his parents for his birthday, "I explained, "then we had cake near dinner time, and by the time we got here, I had completely forgotten I hadn't eaten since one. When I told him I was hungry, he said I would just have to wait until morning."
Taking me off guard, he exclaimed, "What an asshole! What kind of boyfriend lets his girlfriend go without eating?"
"Oh," I said, taken aback again, "we're not dating. Not anymore, at least," I added under my breath.
"So… you're just friends with benefits now?" he inquired.
I was appalled. "NO! We're just close friends, like how we were before we dated."
"I'm sorry. I just assumed…" As he trailed off, he noticed that the water had finally reached a boil and went to pour the noodles in. When he came back, he began again, "So, uh, if you don't mind me asking, why are you staying in his dorm room if he's just your friend?"
"He didn't feel like driving me home tonight," I answered honestly.
"O…kay. So…now he's…"
"Asleep. And I'm supposed to be doing homework."
He got up to stir the noodles. "But you're not because…"
"I can't concentrate when I'm hungry."
"Plus the tears."
"Yeah that."
He could hear the disdain in my voice. "Sorry," he said without looking at me, still intent on the noodles.
"For what? You're not the one who wouldn't feed me."
He laughed. "I'm sorry that he made you feel that way. No friend should treat another friend that way."
"True…"I let my words fade. Then I said, "I guess I'm sorry too. You were asleep, weren't you?"
"What? No." Obvious lie.
"Then what were you doing?" I asked, trying to sound curious.
"Reading, homework, usual boring stuff."
"Shirtless in your pajama bottoms?"
"U-huh." His response was more absent minded now that he had started to drain the water.
"Right. And your pajamas look slept in because…"
"That's how they always look. Leave them crumpled up on the floor all the time, and ALL flannel will look that way."
"I guess that's true…"
"Hah!" he was triumphant. He reached into the fridge and pulled out the butter, threw a chunk into the pot and returned to cooking the mac-n-cheese.
When he was completely done with it, he handed me a bowl and a spoon and rejoined me at the table. "So what book are you reading?" I asked him.
"City of Glass," he answered as he shoved a mouthful of macaroni into his mouth.
"Seriously?" I was entirely surprised by this. "I just finished City of Ashes!"
"Sweet. I bet you were pissed when you found out Jace and Clary's true relationship." He smirked.
I gritted my teeth. "Yes. I can't believe that! I refuse to believe. The inquisitor said—"
My words were cut off by a loud banging on the wall next to us. Another of the boys who lived here was clearly unhappy with my volume. Cody just laughed, and we continued eating in silence. Somehow, we were both finished at the same time. He took my bowl from me and rinsed it himself then seated himself on the couch. He beckoned me over, and I went willingly.
"Can I tell you something, Rylee?" he whispered, leaning in awfully close.
"What is it?" I said, leaning in as well for I could hardly hear him. Our faces were close enough to touch.
He swiftly closed the tiny gap and kissed me on the lips. Shocked for a moment, I held perfectly still until reality kicked in and I realized his lips were pressed onto mine. Lips parting, I closed my eyes and kissed him back.
Cody pulled away. "I think I really like you."
I smiled. "Can I tell you something, Cody?"
"What is it?" he said, and I kissed him again. "I think I really like you too."
