What if Khrushchev, desperate to have settlers in his Virgin Lands campaign, decided to resettle the Romani to a place in Kazakhstan? When he announced the plan, many enthusiastic Eastern European governments are willing to re-settle the Romani people, whom seen by many as troublemakers for their regime. The region selected have KGB Border Guards and military stationed within the new Romani Autonomous Oblast of Kazakhstan, unusual for an oblast.

In 1974, the Romanistani ASSR was formed. In 1986, the Romanistani SSR was formed despite riots in Kazakhstan. In 1991, it joined the other Soviet Republics in their quest for independence.

Today, the Romanistanis have made peace with the Kazakhs and the Russians. It is currently experiencing a migration from Europe, mainly Romani who want to flee Romania and the Balkans. However, the Sovietized "Romanistanis" and the new Romani immigrants have problems, as the former has now been settled, and had a living standard comparable to neighboring Kazakhstan. The new Romanis found themselves doing underclass jobs like construction, and the women becoming domestic helpers, and criticizing the Romanistan-born Roma for ill-treatment of them. It turns out that the foundation of a Roma homeland actually divided much of the Romani population, those remaining in Europe wanted only integration and the end of discrimination.
