07-2017 - WatercolorI met this guy (gal ?) at night in Thailand, he and his friends were having a party to celebrate the night rain, and they were VERY noisy. Well, at least they seemed to have a good time
I took a picture and used it as reference, but it was very dark (and I know nothing about amphibians) so maybe colors and shapes are not accurate. This is the closest identification I found, but any advice from amphibians lovers will be appreciated !
And I'm quite pleased with the background on this one ! Spend a lot of time on it, but this time it was worth it

I love the way you did the black colors in this picture... I'm re-learning my skills [haven't used them in decades, lol] was it difficult to do the black? it's so precise! How did you do it???

I don't remerber the black parts to be difficult, I had more problems with the bushes and palm tree of the background ^^
It's black watercolor, but with almost no water so it's really dark and you can be very precise. You put color where you want and work on dry paper, so the color stays where you put it

He looks adorable! You painted the texture of its skin very realistically (and with watercolour ... all those little details? Wow!). And I love the way the hind leg is folded and the belly touches the ground. Like a cute little balloon with legs. I also like very much that you used such a limited colour range for the whole drawing. It makes for a very harmonious paiting.

For the position, I tried to reproduce as much as possible the picture I took, I didn't trace it but I think it's quite accurate. And yeah, he looks like his body is so soft and elastic ! I wanted to take it in my hands but I didn't dare (he doesn't look like a poison dart frog but...) apparently I was right because wikipedia says his glands secrete toxic fluid ^^
For the colors, at first I made the floor the same color as the toad, but it really looked flat, so I used a bit more reddish tone for the floor and it made it really stand out. But yes, as it is supposed to be night, the light comes from the lamps of the alley and I wanted to reproduce this yellowish atmosphere

Yup, I guess it is not soooo advisable to touch unknown animals - but I can absolutely understand your desire.
Out of this reason I know that the common cross spider indeed does bite
