Description

Made this for a challenge in arvalis ' discord server. I keep instinctively spelling it 'gryphon' rather than griffin though, woops. This one's a weird mix but I am very happy with how it came out.

The Burrowing Gryphon is a small, unusual creature native to South America's scrubby grasslands. Only averaging about 7 inches in length, this animal is mostly found on and under the ground, taking over and improving on existing burrows to form its own network. Its shell is light, flexible and used more for thermoregulation and ease in digging than any real protection against predators. Its wings are small, but functional, and rest somewhat tucked in a pocket between its body and the shell membrane. It doesn't use flight much, but it is capable of short bursts to higher ground. They are primarily terrestrial and are more likely to burrow when disturbed, rather than fly. When burrowing, its capable of scrunching its brow down to nearly cover its large eyes, and will dig with its head down, 'swimming' through dirt and sand while using its distinctive butt plate (lol) to aid in displacing the dirt behind itself.

I saw a bird like this on "The Future is Wild," except it was descended from quails.
