As far as I know the messages stay wherever they are left without getting deleted. I think you might be able to keep them in your own message stack if you un-tick the box that says "Remove this message after 1 reply" (though I haven't tried that myself).
You can become a "watcher" of someone's gallery by profile page an clicking on the "watch" button (It's somewhere near the top right of the page). That means that any new works that the person adds should go into your Deviantwatch message queue.
