Description I've been a little reluctant to post these, because it's a little embarrassing to admit you've watched a kiddie cartoon made for toddlers. However, I missed out on watching VeggieTales as a kid because they were after my time. So I ended up watching them in the past couple of years.

The first one I ever watched was called Esther, the Girl Who Became Queen, and it's based on my fave Bible story . Like any VeggieTales story, they had a cute and kid-friendly way of telling the story, while at the same time keeping to the main theme from the Bible. In Esther's case, it was "God gives us the courage to do what's right."

At first, Esther didn't understand why she had been made Queen above all other girls in Persia, and she wasn't really excited about it anyhow. But when the time came to save her family from being banished to a horrible fate, she realized God had put her in this position just for that purpose. (In the actual story, Esther had to save the Jews in Persia from being slaughtered by risking her life to petition the King).

One thing I always loved about the art in these little cartoons was how detailed they could be, or how the bright colors & characters seem to pop out at you. Plus a lot of the characters have very lovable personalities . (This is actually one of the few stories where Larry the Cucumber played a minor part).

The little lady above is a "human" representation of Esther. (She was actually a celery stalk in the story). I used Azalea's Heroine Fan-art creator to make her . www.azaleasdolls.com/heroine.h… (Thank goodness for the green skintone ). The real challenge for this came from interpreting an armless Veggie's wardrobe to a human one. The first costume is her commoner outfit. The second is the costume she wore while living with the other eligible girls in the palace and participating in the silly little "beauty pageant" they held so the king could choose a bride. (Why they had her wearing a "samurai" type dress, I have no idea). The last one is her signature costume, which actually looks pretty no matter what form it's in.

It was also in this story that I found out how the animators overcame the Veggies not having hands to touch or manipulate objects. They've got INVISIBLE hands! . I figured this out when I saw Esther right after she became Queen, and somehow her crown floats off her head and she's staring at it. I then realized it was SHE who did it, not any weird magic going on in the cartoon.

That's what I thought, based on her shape, but the creators of the cartoon keep saying she's a celery

she is not actually a celery stalk. She is a green onion.

Don't worry, though. I'm almost 15 and I love veggietales!

Esther sure looks like an onion doesn't she?  For some reason the company that made VeggieTales said she was a celery stalk.  But then again, Petunia doesn't exactly look like a rhubarb either.  She too looks like an onion turned upside down.  Either that or a turnip.

I didn't know that Big Idea said she was a celery stalk...

With Petunia, she was the only rhubarb in the show, so I find that easier to deal with, but there is another celery stalk in the show. Phil Winkelstein (Frankencelery) was in the first episode "Where's God When I'm Scared?"...

That's very comforting to hear .  Plus being a parent (I'm not one yet, though I'd like to be someday) is a fun excuse for watching VeggieTales.  Thank you very much .  I had fun making these "human" versions of her.

I only saw this episode once, but i like what you did with her. My family has long been making fun of the fact that they claim to have no hands, but somehow manage to grab things which floats in front of them. In "Josh and the Big Wall" two characters comment on how they're able to clap with no hands.

Lol, clever isn't it? How objects seem to float beside the Veggies whenever they're "holding" them? And yet the objects move the same way as if the characters really were using hands to manipulate them.

And they're always complaining they have no hands! Like in the title song where Bob suggests playing the guitar to Larry; who responds "Bob. I don't have any hands." and yet he can still play a tuba!

Hehe. They updated the intro in the most recent episodes. A little while ago, I downloaded a whole package of VeggieTales episodes, & whoever it was who put them together was kind enough to save me from the intro where Larry is playing the tuba . Granted, it's a cute song, & it's funny to see Larry blow flowers out of his horn b/c it got clogged, but it would get repetitive if u watched that over & over again w/ each story.

I haven't really seen a new Veggie Tales in a long time, most of the videos we own are from the 90's to the early 2000's

Great job!! The story of Esther has been one of my faves as well!

lol . . . I'm 24 and I still watch VeggieTales (then again, when one has younger siblings, it comes as a great excuse to watch something kiddie every once in a while. ).

Never hurts to get in touch w/ the child within, & I did something similar w/ the kids I took care of in daycare. Being a parent can also be a fun excuse to watch kiddie cartoons .
