Hermione put one foot on the ice. It seemed sturdy enough. She looked behind her. No one was on the grounds. It was a quiet December afternoon. It was snowing in slow heavy flakes. It was perfect. Hermione pushed herself out onto the ice. The ice wasn't as smooth as a rink but it would do.
"Miss Granger?" A voice asked curiously. Hermione knew that voice. She had just had a double class with it that afternoon.
"Yes, Professor?" Hermione said when she found Severus Snape on the shore. He wore a heavier cloak than normal that was buttoned up and a pair of black boots and black gloves. The snowflakes were falling in his hair and cloak. He was a stark contrast to the snowy backdrop surrounding him.
"What are you doing?" He asked, tucking his hands into his pockets.
"Have you never seen anyone ice skate before Professor?" Hermione asked as she glided a few feet across the ice.
"Yes I have you insufferable know-it-all, What I meant was the ice is not safe!" Snape snapped at her. Hermione rolled her eyes.
"The ice isn't giving what so ever, I assure you, Professor," Hermione replied and spun.
"Oh please Miss Granger if you fell through where you are now you would barely be up to you knees in the water," Severus replied. Hermione smirked and backed out further.
"Miss Granger, if you dont get off that ice in 5 minutes its thirty points from Gryfindor," Severus said. Hermione was feeling rebelious and backed up a bit more.
"Miss Granger!" Snape snapped again.
"What? You said I had five minutes!," Hermione replied. Severus glared at her.
"Well done Miss Granger, Spoken like a true smart ass," He replied. Hermione backed out some more, keeping her eyes on Severus.
"That is far enough miss Granger!" Severus yelled and got closer to the edge.
"Why don't you come and get me," Hermione asked. Severus glared daggers at her.
"I don't have time for this," He said and turned from her. He took a few steps away, but they both paused when an odd screeching noise could be heard followed by scratching.

Severus ran back to the shore.
"Miss Granger, Now! Get back here!" He yelled at her. Hermione looked down and saw an odd shadow beneath the ice. Hermione began to skate back to the shore but a pound on the ice caused her to loose her balance. She fell to her knees and just as she was almost on her feet again and hand broke through the ice and grabbed her thigh.
"A Grindylow!?" Hermione yelled out. It began to pull her down and the strain caused the ice to break again. Hermione found herself submerged in the freezing cold water. It was like a thousand needles stabbing her everywhere at once. The shock delayed her reflexes. She looked to the hole her body had created and tried to reach for it.

Another hand reached at her again. This one from above water. It grabbed her collar and she latched onto it with both arms.

Severus pulled her from the water, wand at the ready. The Grindylow came up with her and Severus shouted a curse, breaking the creatures hold on her. Severus took off her coat and scarf. He then began untieing her skates. He tossed those aside and then took off her socks. He pulled her too her feet and Hermione was then drapped in a heavy black fur cloak. It swallowed her and Severus picked her up. He began to take her to the castle and Hermione became overcome with shivers. Her hair was freezing before they could get to the castle.

Severus carried her all the way to the Hospital ward and that was the last thing Hermione really remembered. She did wake up hours later warm as she could be still draped in the fur cloak. right in front of her face was a sign pinned tot he cloak. 'Return this when you can you stupid girl' It said. hermione could help but laugh before going back to sleep.
