Description Well, here it is again. I finally finished the costume to my liking this year. Although things have to be repaired somewhat, overall, the costume has held it's own and been damn good to me. I absolutly LOVE this costume the best out of all my work and I adore wearing it.
Cost was around $300.00 for this costume and took alot of time and measuring out precise placements. I made the Chobit ears out of liquid plastic myself and I love them much better then my pair of official Cospa Chii ears.

Character: Freya (aka "Dark Chii) from Chobits by CLAMP

Many thanks to everyone who suffered through this costume with me and lost sleep too. ^_^

Enjoy!

I made those cosplay ears for Chii for myself out of liquid plastic and a mold that I had made from clay. Umm... it's a lot of extra work, but I do hope to make more as I like them better then the ones you can still purchase from Japan since mine are more fitted to my ears. Only downside, they are a little too heavy right now. I might have to find another way to craft them out of another material, maybe super light weight super sculpy next time if I cosplay as Chii again. Which I was thinking of doing since I love the dresses soooooo much. Hope this helps! Ty!

O0O How did you make the amazing hoop skirt?

👍: 0 ⏩: 2

LadyOyuki In reply to KazukiDeng [2011-06-12 21:35:00 +0000 UTC]

There are many patterns for hoop skirts that aren't your standard fabric encasing hoop steel. I'd begin by looking towards period wear hoop skirt patterns on the net and I'm sure you'll find many of them. So, this was an altered pattern I used and fixed a few things I didn't like about the original pattern that also didn't fit the artwork I was cosplaying as. Ty for the comment and sorry it took me so long to reply!

This is the greatest Freya cosplay I've EVER seen, hands down.

I would be forever in your debt if you could provide some inside knowledge of the construction of the hoopskirt. I've been searching for ages but can never find any good tips.

Even if you don't want to help, I'm still a fan. ^_^

The hoopskirt was a pattern from Truly Victorian. It was modified slightly though and I actually decided to go the extra mile with it by sewing the grograin ribbon to itself. My place for buying supplies is Greenburg Hammer.com if memory serves me right. They have a good price on hoop steel.
Thanks again I'm truly flattered.

Umm I think that was meant as a compliment? I'm still not 100% sure? I can't follow your English very well... even if this comment was written to me in 2007. O_o Anyway, ty again and good luck with your fashion school!

*blush* Thanks! This is really is my fav costume to wear. I do feel pretty in it surprisingly. Even though I've got a large butt and huge thighs. ^_^;
I think that alot of people can sew to some extent or if not sew, they can at least with guidence cut out patterns, etc. This way, at least you can say that you helped to make your costume. It's a start anyway. There was sooooooo many people that I met at this past AWA (and others) that have talents for props and sewing skills that I'd love to have. But, if everyone had the same skills, then nothing would ever be unique in difference. I like talking with both experienced costume creators and non-experienced ones. If you ever need any tips, I'll be sure to help you out if I can. ^_~

I make all the garb for my husband and I for the live action role play medieval/fantasy society we belong to called Amtgard. And I've never had assistance working with a pattern for clothes so I'm a bit intimidated by them. I've been designing all of our garb myself. It would be nice to feel comfortable with patterns since there are so many good ones out there for medieval garb now.

LadyOyuki In reply to Caladria [2005-09-30 00:43:08 +0000 UTC]

Oh yes! I have a TON of medieval patterns now. Most of them I have no problems understanding either. But believe me, being able to make your own patterns from scratch or with the help of a pattern to assist is what all anime cosplayers truly need to be able to do. Because there simply is no patterns exactly like what anime charas you want to make 9 out of 10 times. I also do rennessance/medieval (and 1700's-1800's) costumes for myself and my friends too. I really enjoy making thoes. I go to ren fair here in GA every year if I can afford it. It's alot of fun! I can't even compare it to an anime con though - the 2 are totally different. ^_^ But I love them both very much! I would love to see some of your medieval work if you have any pics.

Thanks! I try my best and sometimes then, I still feel that I don't quite measure up to what I want to be. I'm hoping that I can wear Hinoto at least one more time, but it's such a challenging costume to wear and very incumbersome too. I hope to see you at an anime con sometime. I should have an artist alley table next year so that way, your chances of finding me at AWA if you go are much more likely to suceed. Thanks again for the wonderful compliment!

That's gorgeous! I loooove cosplay! You did an excellent job making it too. My costumes are kind of.... okaaay.... but not hand-made-awesometacular.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

LadyOyuki In reply to seloy [2005-09-28 06:43:23 +0000 UTC]

Thanks a bunchies! Awesometacular... that's a new word for me. ^_^ I can give you a few tips or help if you ever need it to the best of my abilities, etc. But I think that even some of the simplest made costumes are just as good if not better then some of the "super ritsy way expensive to make" costumes like mine are. I mean, I'm really BIG on having my costumes look as close as I can possibly get them to being like they are in the picture that I choose to make. I am not one much for "varient costumes" because I feel sort of indifferent towards them. I understand when things are unavoidable, because it's happened to me on a few occassions and you have to improvise as best that you can. You don't have a choice for a 2D pictures converting it into real life costumes sometimes. But, don't give up! Hang in there and I'm sure that with alot of work and practice, you will get better at making costumes. Remember, you only truly have to please yourself and have a good time. The costumes can be made to please other people, but if you aren't happy, then their's no real point.

Thanks! I try to post a few of my cosplay pics on this site because even though I'm on both cosplay.com and cosplaylab.com, I honestly consider making/sewing/desiging my costumes to be an artform and therefore sutible to post as part of my art for DA. ^_^ Thanks again!

LadyOyuki In reply to quantumslasher [2005-09-26 06:33:33 +0000 UTC]

Thanks bunchies! Yeah, it's a good series. It's got alot of nice humor and hint of shojou-ness but not overkill for being a "girly" series. I really love Freya because of her attitude about everything. She's actually a very dark character and I hope to make just one more Chobits costume for her. That will be my last Chobits costume unless I just really REALLY want to make another one. Chii has been cosplayed to DEATH at cons and although I adore the series, I'm rather tired of seeing the same ol same ol - so I try to do something different when I do make costumes from anime series such as this. Thanks again! ^_~

quantumslasher In reply to LadyOyuki [2005-09-26 13:55:21 +0000 UTC]

Yes, I'm more of a perfectionist when it comes to costumes. If the costume's not right, I won't wear it. ^_^ I'm still planning on making a few costumes which will be rather difficult and expensive (retractable latex wings for one, and smithed armour for the other, note me if you wanna know which characters, hehe) but would be totally worth it. Regardless of convention or not.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

LadyOyuki In reply to quantumslasher [2005-09-28 05:25:03 +0000 UTC]

Oh, I agree! Thoes costumes sound really neat! I have a friend who wants to do the latex/stretchy material wing thing too for my Demonic Duo picture. Although the weight of the wings alone would be insane and would take ALOT of work. Even then, it wouldn't be guarenteed. There are a few people who do their own metal working armour. Mostly chain mail though or sheet metal that's been makeshifted into what they can manage. Few accomplish really REALLY good things and even then, it costs out the @$$ and takes a very gifted person. I'm just surprised that my claws for my Hinoto costume turned out the way that I wanted them to considering I sculpted them from a 2D flat picture and have never sculpted anything like that in my life before. I pretty much told myself that if I couldn't make the claws, that I wasn't going to make the costume. Sometimes I do believe that it's best to start with the hardest part (or what you think will be the hardest part anyway) of the costume and just get it over and done with, etc. Yes, I'd love to know the characters that you are planning on making. Hopefully I know who they are. Please send me a DA note with who's who. And there are also a few things that I too want to make just to have. But, I'm broke now and umm... need more money if I'm even going to think about starting a new costume again. ^_^;
