I have to admit I am really ashamed on how this turned out... I told you guys I need to work on the male anatomy. I got so used to drawing girls. I hate the way I draw guys... I feel like all of the time spent photographing references of hands and stance just wooop out the window. I spent a long time on this and it still turned out like poop. T_T

I missed doing my sloppy chainmail textures (cartooned squiggles) and I loved doing it as a kid but I may need to upgrade how I draw those. Welp guys the truth is when you draw from life it is sometimes well... boring. Since real fighting is actually quite quick and its technicalities are quite boring. My husband used to help instruct a Ninjustu class when I was younger before we married, and he agree's the real thing isn't as cool as Hollywood makes it seem. (But in truth way cooler because fights are effective and the sh** get dished out fast.) The truth is fights are often over in seconds or minutes not hours or days like in fantasy. The thing about fantasy art in stances and fighting poses is that the artist often relies on exaggeration or dynamic posing. You take it away you have the real authentic stance but its no where near as cool as the comics make them out to be. Sometimes it can be I guess it depends on how it is drawn. May help to have a larger piece of paper next time? More room to work with but still if the skill isn't there it probably won't make a difference. Thank you for allowing me to learn male anatomy on your character.
Honestly though I feel like this gift was a fail. I'm sorry forgiveness please! Can't win them all I suppose...

Sorry you didn't like how it came you ;w; The clothes are really good though! And the anatomy isn't terrible, it just need a little tweaking

lol It doesn't help that I based the reference on my husband and he is a big guy and has a big head. XD I love him though.

(specific suggestions: his hips, chest and shoulders are too narrow for the head and legs.)

Have you ever downloaded reference sets?  Proko has a bunch of male and female reference sets, and they even have a free set you can download as a sample.

Yeah that seems to be my trouble spot with all my guys.

Not form places like this since a lot pf them are pay. Most of the ones I use I've made for myself or I grab free use no attribution stock but still attribute when I do use them. Most of my drawing in the last decade ish was all done from memory with no reference. Referencing was just recent as of 2014. If you look at my older pieces I sometimes wonder how I even understood body mechanics I think it came naturally and with practice? But there is also a lot of static art since I was focusing on designing clothing or concept armor.

I draw all the time from memory, but I find I usually slide into my comfortable ruts when I do this.  I've been trying to draw (and sculpt) more from references (sometimes using several different ones to composite an entire image) in order to not only learn the anatomy better, but to broaden the range of my compositions.

Some of it also comes with the artist's ability to observe from life, and remember things, as well as thinking in 3D, and being able to project on to 2D.

Of course, there is NOTHING as fun as doing real drawing from a live model (nude or non-nude) if you have a chance to go to a drawing from life class.  We had one here for years, only charged about $5 for an hour and a half session with a bunch of friends.  The artist who organized it did it mostly for fun, so the sessions were friendly, informal, with models he could bring in from local dance studios or the community theater.  That has been discontinued, unfortunately, but I'm trying to supplement with some good YouTube resources.

See I do that too. I go into ruts I've noticed too. I return to the comfort zone. I do understand I think to a good degree how the body works but I know I could use improvement. A lot of what I've drawn without references I sometimes wondered how I did them. Like was body mechanics at the time more subconscious?

I've never had the opportunity. If I had stayed in school I may have done that. I have considered it. Most of what I have to do is from memory or what is in front of a mirror. Hands/Feet in mirrors. I can generally twist the body in mind a bit I've noticed. Like I said I don't know if its subconscious in the past or something but I kind of figured it out somehow and now I think I over analyze.

One of the best defenses against ruts is just knowing they are there....

And yes, over-thinking is another rut.

After spending several years with Martin's class, I keep wondering if I could organize something, but it sounds like a lot of work, not to mention getting a location, encouraging participants, getting models, establishing a reputation (safety for models), figuring out the finances...  Phew.  Mirrors are easier.    (Or, just getting a couple of friends who will come over and pose for a few sketches every so often.)

I couldn't agree more and over-thinking seems to be a huge problem of mine. My husband says I death spiral a lot. :/

As for that, it sounds really cool. As I can totally understand doing something like that especially now with the me 2 movement you would have to probably do something to protect yourself as well. I noticed you to a lot of female form especially mother and child art. I'm not a confident person I don't know if I would ever have the courage to do that myself, but I've though about asking people to model for me. I just don't have a way to pay people.

One of Sue's famous quotes: "Back away from the sculpture....   it's done now."

Well, sometimes she's premature thinking it's done, but a lot of the time she's right...

It would be a challenge with a nude model, unless it was a larger class, but with a non-nude (eg., dance outfit), you can still learn a lot and side step some issues.

funny thing.... even being a male myself (and therefore somewhat familiar with the anatomy), I still have a much easier time with sculpting (or drawing) the female figure, basically because that's what I've practiced the most.

Actually, kind of like the plate mail.

Something I'm trying to learn is to use "action lines" in my drawing.  It's a method to add more dynamic to a figure, even in a relatively static pose.  I know in my sculpting, I'm always trying to look at the figure from every angle to see if the lines follow through.

(and... no drawing is ever a "fail".  It's just a lesson in how to NOT do something. )

I haven't heard of action lines I would like to hear more of that. I could go look it up too. XD Google that

Yeah I get what you mean. I think too there is a lot less defined muscle in the female form so much softer and therefore it is easier to manipulate.

Thank you for the compliment

Sometimes called gesture or rhythm, they're all the same idea.  Proko has a several videos on the idea, but this was one of my favorites:

Awesome. I hadn't thought of that. My husband said it looked like a video game too. I think he said Dragon Quest? Haven't played it. Thank you 👍: 0 ⏩: 1

It's not as bad as you make it sound actually. Sure it is a bit rough in places but I like the armor, cape and stance.

Thanks I was hoping to kind of go more semi-realistic again. I have to say I miss armor designing. XD

Thanks, after art trade I'll work more on original story characters and  use them for art study.
