Great work. It does look like it's come from a medieval manuscript!

This is great! I like that you used a semi-familiar piece of historical art but made it your own.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

Laerad In reply to relicsong [2006-04-04 13:36:39 +0000 UTC]

would you happen to know where from the original is ? The reference I have used for this one is a big collection of medieval line drawings from various sources, but it doesn't say where it comes from.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

relicsong In reply to Laerad [2006-04-14 01:50:09 +0000 UTC]

Sadly no. I thought it might have been from Chartres, France but nothing turns up. I'll look in my books (instead of the interweb) and let you know.

Nice, are the colours also after a historical piece?

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

Laerad In reply to SuseDolAmroth [2006-04-03 15:39:13 +0000 UTC]

no, the colors are straight out of my head. But the use of lines of different shade of the same color is.

SuseDolAmroth In reply to Laerad [2006-04-04 10:53:25 +0000 UTC]

I thought so... the don#t look terribly authentic but work excellently with the motive

plus we are used to see muted colors on manuscripts, but they were very vivid to start with, but after more than 1000 years, they don't look so fresh, and parchment darkens.

SuseDolAmroth In reply to Laerad [2006-04-04 13:45:37 +0000 UTC]

How would you know....

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

Laerad In reply to SuseDolAmroth [2006-04-04 16:07:38 +0000 UTC]

well, I have seen new parchment (calf, goat) and it is a pale creamy beige. As for the pigments, studies have been made to identify them. The chemistry of pigments is a very interesting science ! And a lot of pigments that were used back then were not very permanent, so the color has disappeared, but the chemical signature remains and lets us imagine how it might have looked like. [link] is a very intersting website about pigments. But for my illuminations right now, I am using gouaches, hence some modern pigments, but I will soon go to a pigment workshop. [link] This is an amazing piece with historical pigments.

Actually so have I. I couldn't resist the pun. The two classical pigemts I've used personally (apart from the obvious9 are sheet gold and butterfly blue (in a necklace). I like exploring it however I'd draw a line where it isn't light resistant enough. The link is indeed a very interessting read, thank you for it

Also all the earths pigments in modern paints are the same... sienna, umber and the such.

SuseDolAmroth In reply to Laerad [2006-04-05 14:01:21 +0000 UTC]

Yes, this is what I was referring to with obvious ones I use those quite a lot, actually. But also new syntetoc ones such as Cadmiumcolours.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

Laerad In reply to SuseDolAmroth [2006-04-05 14:04:02 +0000 UTC]

Just beware of cadmium, as it is very toxic and accumulates in the body.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

SuseDolAmroth In reply to Laerad [2006-04-06 07:16:28 +0000 UTC]

Well compared to the stuff I work with Cadmium is certainly on the harmless side

I am glad you like it ! Now, after doing a few enluminures after historic designs, I am trying to figure out which style I like to do best and how I can develop some designs of my own. This one was a test to see if I could do a character, but the hand holding the mirror still bugs me.
