Description Such a crazy day of hiking, shooting, and overall amazement on the Lake 22 Trail. By the time we reached this waterfall, it we had heard several long rumbles of thunder. Unaccustomed to the weather in WA, I foolishly asked *blyndspy if it was an avalanche. But the sky darkened, the clouds thickened, and it began to rain harder.

Little did we know, the weather would soon switch from the moderate rain you see in this photo to snow pellets and then finally to snow. We couldn't believe how quickly the snow accumulated in just a few short minutes!

What an unbelievably beautiful experience.

Well captured! Glad you made it out of the snow the weather in the mountains is always a surprise I got caught in a snowstorm in the Bighorns on June 9th of last year--snow total was 15 inches

Oh my gosh! It was hard for me to imagine seeing snow in the summer until I went to WA last summer...and the snow is just always there on the mountains! Made me realize that, perhaps, our "mountains" in WV are more like big hills.

I would much rather walk through the woods while it's snowing than when it's raining....and here you managed to take advantage of the weather and come up with a great shot...!!!

beautiful.....funny how the weather kinda cements the memory of a hike....

again..

beautiful coposition...!!

I don't know if I'd rather one or the other...they've both got something special to add to the photograph/hike. Funny you say that, the weather really does cement the memory, as I can recall the weather on just about every hike I remember.

Thanks Dread!

I live vicariously through your hikes with Addam! So glad you endure the elements and share the beauty.

Such a sweet thing to say, Terri! It means a lot to me that we can share our hikes with you and give you just a glimpse of the beauty out there.

I got your note, and I'll be answering it tonight when I have some more time to sit down and write it out!

That is beautiful. And worth that damp cold you experienced.

That precip that is the price we pay for these beautiful waterfalls and our 40 shades of green. Wouldn’t have it any other way.

Thank you so much, and yes...it was more than worth it!

I love the precip for that reason. I still can think of no other word that more accurately describes Washington than "magical". I'm completely in awe every time I see another waterfall or hike through the forest.

You’re welcome…..

The other half of the state (my side of the mountains) is desert, prairie and steppe. From the Pacific Ocean to the Rocky Mts of Idaho is just over 350 mile…but in that distance are literally thousands of independent ecosystems. It would be fun to shoot them all.

I'd love to see and shoot them all, that's for sure.

The down side is the temperature shifts. Right now it is 30 degrees and we are expecting 10 to 18 inches of snow by tomorrow afternoon. In summer a range of 95 to 105 degrees is common. But it is a dry heat with very low humidity so it is manageable.

LAlight In reply to TRunna [2012-01-19 00:18:07 +0000 UTC]

I heard about all that snow! Good luck with that. I'm not sure how I feel about 95-105 degrees in the summer. It's usually 85 or so here in the summer, but the humidity is KILLER. I definitely dislike the summer weather here.

TRunna In reply to LAlight [2012-01-19 01:53:42 +0000 UTC]

That heat is not too bad when the humidity is around 20%. But Adam would agree with you.

was definitely a crazy day of hiking! glad ya got to experience the NW weather though

and to get such a beautiful shot during that downpour! flawless water exposure and greens with some wonderful atmosphere! and have to say that a lot of the places around here have the jumble of log deposits at the bottom..way to make it work so well in the image..amazing work, LeeAnne!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

LAlight In reply to NWunseen [2012-01-17 16:20:18 +0000 UTC]

Haha...those jumbles would ruin a shot in WV. In WA, they seem to be part of the beauty somehow. Maybe because the trees are just so BIG, I keep thinking "How in the world did that even get there?!" Thanks for the kind words, Addam...eager to see more jumbled log messes soon!

Oh my gosh! I actually went back and looked at that photo today after reading this comment...they DO look like twigs compared to the NW logs!! Funny that in our comments, you mentioned how I'd react to the logs out there.

some amazingly vivid greens for winter...gotta love the nw!!..sweet little comp, at this cool, little spot, to cap your day..nicely done, la!!

LAlight In reply to db-imagery [2012-01-17 16:17:27 +0000 UTC]

Very vivid! I was discussing another shot with Addam (which I'll be sharing shortly) where I actually had to tone the greens down - they were TOO vivid! I didn't mess with the saturation here at all, it's just how it was. Just brightened it up a bit because it was really, really dark. I'm still amazed at how alive it looks and feels in the PNW, even in the winter. Thanks Doug!
