If I did this with gamzees horns will this work to or be to heavy? I had a pair but some one broke them and I would like to make a new pair, but that looks nicer. So will this work?

for attachment do you always use this method, or is it just for tall horns? like, do you do this for karkat and nepeta horns as well?

For smaller horns like Karkat, Terezi, Sollux and Nepeta you can always attach them to hair clips

True, but if you do that the hair clips can more than often slide around and readjust itself.

Ok, now I understand. I'm glad I'm just doing short horns though, because this will be my first time trying and I doubt I could do longer ones.

If your doing a troll whose horn is partially broken (like with equius) would it be better to not sand it as much in the place it was broken? To make it look more ragged.

I'm doing horns for Gamzee and I have a quick question. When the model magic dries, is it suppose to be rock hard? Mine have been drying for about two or three days and they're still a bit squishy. Is that normal?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
ViewingTm In reply to InsAnimeGamer [2013-08-12 19:32:05 +0000 UTC]
That is actually very normal. The box says they dry to the touch ( I guess are harder to move) within 24 hours and are supposed to be completely dry within 2-3 days. (The time period really just depends on the thickness of the clay) I've made a Tavros horn (just one because I still have to make the other), Sollux horns, Kanaya horns, and Nepeta ones. The Nepeta horns have been drying for... sometime close to a week now and they are still a bit squishy.
I have Karkat ones that I made months ago and if I hadn't covered them in paint they wouldn't feel as hard as they do. But they are still a bit soft.
It's pretty usual for me to have them like that at least.
Just be careful and don't throw them anywhere. (They might bounce off of a few things...)
They should be fine.

My fifth adhesive failed today, and now I'm looking at tutorials as I will be on location this weekend for a 413 city larp.

OMFG IT WORKED THANK YOU. In my most recent deviation ("4-11-13 News") I tagged this in the comments as being a great help. I was desperate, and RIGHT NOW, 12+ HOURS LATER, THE HORNS. ARE STILL. ATTACHED.
You are an angel. Don't let anybody tell you otherwise.

Eek, I attempted this with Crayola Air-Dry clay and lemme tell ya, you better be sure you cut the bottom of the horn correctly before it dries. But besides my own idiocy, thank you very much for the great tutorial!

umm I have two quick question if you don't mind. One is about the acrylic paints, I'm kind of on a low budget and I was wondering how much the paint you're using for the horns actually cost, and if there's any alternative paint I could possibly use and still keep that good quality look. And second is I'm cosplaying Kurloz and I was wondering if you could tell me exactly how big you make the horns, or at least a guess of how big I should make them.

Skyzhema In reply to Canary-Wolf [2013-04-10 04:38:51 +0000 UTC]
I use a rather odd choice, but it's super cheep to get all the colors.
Get watercolors (tubes or cakes, I prefer tubes). Mix with one of these:
-thick corn sugar/white homemade cake icing
-white acrylic
-a thin layer of clay
if using the first, coat with a clear layer. I have never had a need to do so for the latter two unless it was raining at the event. (Never used it for horns, but for previous cosplay headgear I often did this.)
NO, the first mixture is not a bug attractor if coated with lacquer or sealant. I still have a helmet with deco work from six years ago, left on a shelf, and have not had a problem.

Hey! The thing with acrylic paints is you pay for quality. The Folk Art brand I use is about 1-3$ per bottle but I use very little of it at a time because they're a nice thick paint. So I put about two coats of orange then add the yellow and darker orange and there's still a lot left. I've done about 11 sets on just one bottle[ I run out of mid-orange fastest because I use it the most]. You don't want watery acrylic paints because you'll end up using the whole bottle just trying to get an even coat of paint.
For Gamzee, I usually make them about 6 inches but for Kurloz, you could go for about 7-8 but keep the base thick to hold most of the weight. I roll them straight first, then curve it. It's always better though, to compare it to your head to make sure they look decent!
I hope that helps!

I made some gamzee horns following this tutorial. They came out looking great. My only problem was once I put the headband onto realized that the horns weighed a ton! The head band keeps sliding off due to the weight of the horns. Help?

I'm doing karkat horns so i figure it will be easier if i put them on clips...should i just glue them on or...is there an easier way? o: Or should i just put them on a headband instead?! D:

Since karats horns are small I would take advantage of using a headband, you should have a look into putting screws into the horns and attaching them to one.
They would be very secure.

Is this the magic mold stuff? I made a pair of gam zee horns for my cosplay and the broke 3 times tell I threw them away. If you carve them out of foam its much easier to keep on your head , they don't slip down and don't give you a head ach. They just take longer to carve but its worth it trust me!

I think you mean Model Magic. Anyways, Gamzee horns are probably the second-largest to Tavros' horns, so they're pretty easy to break. Did you use anything under the Model Magic to keep the horns sturdy? It's a good idea to use thick wire and foil, taped with masking tape. It depends on what type of foam, and most times, Foam is pretty costly to get it thick enough for 3D horns. Horns should NOT give you a headache, especially since it's model magic (it's light as hell), and it could be just the type of clay you used. Have you tried any other clays, such as Paperclay or Fimo Light?

You should put a note about Aradia's horns and how you might not cut into the same part of the horn as you would with all the other horns. Great tutorial though. This really helped me a lot!

I use model magic for my horns and some acrylic paints. I dont know whether (for Gamzee's large horns) to drill them onto a headband or just glue em. im scared of them breaking!

Glass-Spork In reply to StanxKyleFan [2012-07-26 01:13:04 +0000 UTC]
well it depends on there weight. model magic isn't that heavy so you should get away with glue. but it also depends on the kind of headband you have. if its thick then glue should definatly be fine~!
do you have questions on anything else?

Um, hi! I know you were trying to figure out how to make Tavros horns stay on better, and I think I might have a solution!
[link]
So I know you're not putting wigs on with the horns, so the wig part is irrelevant, but screwing the horns to the headband might work for those Tavros horns of yours!
