Description A while ago I told myself I shouldn't draw frontal portraits or otherwise highly symmetrical works anymore because they are a pain to do properly - even in digital art. So, naturally, I keep doing them all the time XD

So for those who don't know, this is my dear friend, Helix. And the thing is.... after I drew a portrait for her and her brother and I sort of fucked up the flames in that one (the thing I had in mind was a little too ambitious of an idea for pencil art and my current skills), I had almost instantly decided I gotta do another drawing for her, this time with proper flames. Aaaand.... since the idea was already in my mind pretty much as a clear vision, it was obviously only a matter of time. Longer time than I had expected myself because some dragons and other beasts crashed down on me in the meantime demanding attention, leaving my dear woof buddy standing on my desk for a while waiting to get more than lineart. However, last night I had another drawing outburst and nearly finished it within a breath.

Some meaningful (or meaningless, depends on the viewpoint) remarks. Woofnose is confusing, but I think I begin to understand it a bit better. Now, woofpaw is the next challenge. Woofpaw is bloody intricate. Especially from below XD The thing with the paw was, I needed it to hold the flames. A bit of a strange pose for a wolf, and yet it works well for me here. Now, the lighting is a bit difficult to do with pencils in an impactful way (in fact it can look a lot more dramatic in digital art probably), but I actually am rather satisfied. I like it that it's asymmetrical, it makes it more interesting, and in this sense the idea with the paw was a good one. Might also sound immodest, but I effin love the way the paw with the flames look. I made that almost without thinking and it turned out epic. Nuff said. Only drawback is that against the fire-lit fur the flames aren't very prominent, but they are still visible.
Last but not least, the eyes. Unlike any other time, this time I left them for the very last - which is VERY unlike me, I usually draw them very early on and in full detail, because I'm rather impatient to work on the eyes and do all the magick there as soon as possible, and then I spend the rest of the drawing time doing acrobatics around them so that I don't touch them with my hands and damage the very fine detail that is always there in the eyes of my portraits. This time I didn't, I waited until pretty much everything else was finished. I don't know why. Maybe I wanted to see how the lighting would be on the rest of the drawing so that I know better what to do with the eyes. Seriously, a lot of the time I don't know why I'm doing this one way or another, I just don't think, and just do stuff. Just draw on instinct. And somehow a lot of the time it even works. But anyway, even so, until the very last moment I wasn't sure I'm doing the eye thing right. How to draw glowing amber eyes with a pale blue reflection in the cornea? All my knowledge about epic eye highlighting and shading here had a very wtf-to-do moment. Right before I finished them I thought I had failed miserably. But.... turned out I didn't. I'm actually VERY happy with the result. And the glare and expression they make for, ahh, this is even better than I had imagined it. Seriously, I do some magick with eyes, but I really don't know how. Probably via modesty

Anyway, enough random rambling. It's a spiritual piece and it should be regarded as one.
The Fire is blue because it's Hellfire. That's become a rather common view in my arts. It should stay this way.

2B - 8B, polychromos pencils. 20 x 30 cm.
Not sure for the time, about 4 hours in total probably.

Thank you! Yeah, I had it in mind, though I couldn't distinctly see it before I started drawing, but I can say it turned out kinda bluer and shinier than I had expected Win-win

I always love the way you draw hair and fur, it always looks well and whenever I try to do individual strands it looks silly xD

And I'm truly glad you like it You know, I hardly even thought about how to make the portrait look like you, but now when I see it finished, it does more than I imagined I can.... at least to me. Those eyes.... it just has the feeling.
And by the way, you deserve it. You've been with me in all those heavy moments, I really want you to know and feel that you mean so very much to me
