Description

Aaaand another painting of Kattfjorden I made quickly in Norway and completed later. I remember how this one came to be actually. I had already painted a few and I thought I probably won't do much more, but the light in the sky that day was so fantastic that I couldn't resist. Straumsaksla in the distance was blending in a haze and clouds of really really beautiful blue, and right next to it the sunset light hit the clouds above Tverrfjellet painting them intense orange - so intense and bright that it lit up the whole side of Durmålstinden in orange hues. I remember looking at this magic thinking how infinitely beautiful it was and just marvelling at the light bouncing from one end to the other and back.... and really thinking, this is how you learn - by observing the greatest Master of art of all time: Nature. So I tried to memorize and later tried to recreate the colors and the light. I am not entirely satisfied with the cliffs of Durmålstinden here, the colors were tricky in such high contrast, but it actually was this stark for real.

I had a lot of fun painting it in any case, even if I didn't get the details quite as clean as the previous. Also, lights and reflections on ice and snow are tricky when the surface is already quite white. It takes really subtle changes in value for a relatively dramatic effect.... it's a difficult balance because it always feels like I don't have "enough space" left to pure white, which is a no-go. Tough. But I think I quite nailed it here.

This time we are in the company of a moose lady. One of the last days we saw, quite randomly, a moose trotting over the sea ice, right next to the shore, then she climbed up and continued shortly along the road before she went around the house and up towards the forest. She seemed to be wounded, her trot was uneven and she seemed quite stressed. So I was exhilarated about seeing a moose for the first time in person and actually being worried.... I hope she was okay after all and made it. So I decided to draw her here. We have a few crows nearby, one being very important and one seemingly levitating.... actually hopping, lol, I looked at references but this is difficult to put into a static painting. Then also a whole flock of ptarmigans taking off. I often paint with a brush first and clean up details a bit later with pencil, but in this case I realized the brush made it look like their wings were smudged by the motion - and I really liked the effect so I left it like this. I quite like how they turned out, I hope you enjoy as well.
