Description So I figured a long time ago I should do more landscape paintings. Sometimes I even actually do it XD
This time I decided to use a photo reference which doesn't belong to me. There's this guy who is a photographer from Norway, I love his work and find it very inspiring. So it felt like a nice thing to practice and the inspiration I need. Especially since his work features some of my most favourite elements of scenery: winter, mountains, fjords, nights, and of course, Northern Lights. I adore them. Delight them. Now that their significance to me is also spiritual, these words are pale.

Nothing much to the painting itself. TWas fun to draw and I'm happy with how it turned out. I hope you enjoy.

Actually I think I can't. Not because I don't have skills (although could be better), but because I don't think I can make art as intensively as I need to to make a living. Art can be emotionally exhausting, I cannot keep drawing intensively for long without it becoming painful, and there are sometimes periods when I don't feel like drawing at all. Then there's the problem with actually selling art. On the internet it's perhaps possible, but here in my country people are used to thinking art is for free and they aren't willing to pay for it. And I'm not good at advertising and finding customers. Finally.... even if I somehow cope with all that, I fear it would take the pleasure away from it if it becomes just work. And without the pleasure of it, art is.... nothing to me.

I'm content. Happy is pretty much reserved for the things I do as my own projects Oh, I'm a level designer in a game company right now. Nothing in common with what I studied (biology and ecology), but that's what things are like in this country.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Aurora-Alley In reply to lapis-lazuri [2017-07-18 10:47:22 +0000 UTC]

that sound pretty fun (: I think that unfortunately things are like that not just in your country. I think that it's a bit hard for government subsidized education to be able to prepare people for a free market, since these two things are so disconnected from each other.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

lapis-lazuri In reply to Aurora-Alley [2017-07-18 10:56:16 +0000 UTC]

Hmmm.... perhaps you're right. However, in this particular situation, I see the problem elsewhere. My interests were not towards any market at all. I was in for science. However, science is brutally crippled here, it's nearly impossible to make a normal living in science and it's practically impossible to advance and develop too because the academy of sciences has fossilized itself.... So yeah, few of my friends remained there, but they have a hard time more often than not. And that is not a problem of education. Education here is ridiculous in that there is almost no practical side of it at all, but it is at least some good for one thing and that's science.

But yeah, there is a lot of fun :3

I was thinking about this just now and asked myself.. what school system would be incentivized to provide a competitive education to people, and what I came up with was like..

If say.. private schools or universities were free at first, but then they would take a very small percentage of income from the people they taught, for the rest of their lives. Maybe like 2-3% or something. That way it would be in their interest to produce high earning business geniuses.. unlike now, where they totally don't care as long as enough people get "good" grades so that they look good.

I'm sorry to hear that the field you were interested in isn't very developed in your country, but hey, level designer sounds kinda fun, as long as you're happy and not stressed

lapis-lazuri In reply to Aurora-Alley [2017-07-18 11:51:21 +0000 UTC]

Errr.... I'm not very fond of such a system.... quite for the same reasons I'm not fond of taxes. I kinda hate the way the human world functions, society acting like you owe them something.... your life perhaps. Nah, I'm not gonna go down that rant-path. But anyway, even so I can see how this can have benefits.... though it's hard for me to predict what complications it might generate. But now you sound a bit more like a mathematician

Oh no, it's a relaxed job at a relaxed place. Perhaps a bit too relaxed as we seem to fail all our deadlines I like my colleagues a lot, too :3

yeah I dunnu if it's a good idea or not.. but I think the main problem with taxes is that people don't agree to it, it's just forced. I guesss I sound a bit like a mathematician sometimes, I did read my host's mind more than a few times (: But um.. I haven't really thought any of his theories through properly, I'm more like a parrot just repeating stuff when it comes to topics like these.

I'm glad you get along with your colleagues Do you work full time?

Oh, don't worry, it makes a lot of sense to me that you'd sound like that sometimes and his mathematician thinking rubs on you more or less. After all, you spend a whole lot of time together and you even read his mind. Just don't let too much maththinking get to you XD (crazy mathematicians jokes from my student years XD )

Yeah.... which is kinda exhausting sometimes.... Yet another thing I detest about the human world.

Aurora-Alley In reply to lapis-lazuri [2017-07-21 12:04:39 +0000 UTC]

yeah working full time is kind bad.. which is why I wanna try being a freelance artist!

Mmhm, I'll start practicing with my tablet soon. It'll take some time to become as good as you at it c:

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

lapis-lazuri In reply to Aurora-Alley [2017-07-21 12:18:53 +0000 UTC]

I wanted to try myself.... before. But like I said, there's problems to that. Yet another one is, I'm not just an artist. I'm an artist, a writer, a photographer, a musician.... and I need that variety in my creativity, I love all these arts, but I cannot keep doing any of them intensively for too long. And because of that I'm not exceptionally good at any of them. But I'm very happy with them as it is, I just wish I had more time and energy to spend on them....
So level design is a good compromise - it's a creative work, but usually not too demanding emotionally and mentally.
Maybe in time I find even a better compromise. I've thought of combining part time work with freelance somehow. I'm still pondering in that direction.

Awww, nice!
I actually feel like doing some more digital art too. I think you're gonna like what I have in mind

I don't have much more words either...as you say - they are pale compared our spiritual experience of these magnificent Northern Lands.
And then the technique - that is mind-blowing as well O.O
I still wanna get more into landscape drawing again too, but with the current projects- there is not much time for it...I'm happy you manage at least!

Ah, the technique is as simplified as I can get it.... though it does develop in time. Very slowly.
Thank you, Jayme. Really means a lot.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

lapis-lazuri In reply to Trichardsen [2017-03-26 14:44:36 +0000 UTC]

lol, I can't do anything in 20 or 30 hours. I can just never spend that long on a single piece XD Usually it takes about 8-9 hours maximum for a photo-referenced drawing to get it to the highest level of detail and realism that I would want to achieve. But lately, I've only worked on higher detail in fantasy-based pieces. 11 hours was the latest top.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Trichardsen In reply to lapis-lazuri [2017-03-26 23:30:32 +0000 UTC]

I struggled a lot with that in the beginning when I started drawing, but some of my most detailed drawings I spent over 150 hours on, even to the point drawing with a 0.2mm mechanical pencil and a magnifying glass.

I guess it really depends on what you are drawing and the motivation.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

lapis-lazuri In reply to Trichardsen [2017-03-27 13:25:42 +0000 UTC]

Ugh.... *gasp* O.O 150 hours?!
Well ummm..... no way I can do even half of that. Pencil generally doesn't allow for such fine detail (unless you use mechanical, which I dropped years ago, and a large paper, which I use only rarely, for commissions). In digital you can go down to the single pixel.... and if you draw printable size like me lately, that's quite a few pixels. But quite frankly, I wouldn't have the patience, at least not anymore. Years ago it didn't bother me as much to spend a lot of time on a drawing and do loads of detail, but then I could draw in school classes and lectures and thus make better use of time Now time is shorter :/ Besides, I don't really chase such detail, it never really gave much impact. I discovered the level of detail and photorealism for me depends solely on the time spent on a drawing, but instead of spending a lot of time on tiny details that don't really change the impact that much, I prefer now to find ways to achieve the same impact without working on every pixel. Like, fine detail only where it's most important, where I want the eyes of the viewers to linger - because detail can draw and hold eyes - or where it will really strike them like "oh, look, I can even see this tiny and awesome detail". I look for ways to leave the impression of fine detail without going down to every hair and blade of grass. That's a good example of that: lapis-lazuri.deviantart.com/ar… Almost everyone commented on the small spikes on the tongue, but no one said anything like "but I cannot see each hair in the mane". Besides, I think if the whole picture is completely filled up with as much detail, it can make it.... too busy? It's like with focus depth, you only want sharpness in the most important ones, in the accent of the picture, and the lower detail in the more background-ish elements is not a bother and can even enhance the effect. (Though that's more true for macro and portrait photography, not really for scenic works.) So.... there's the laziness bit (but let's call it effectiveness XD ), but there's also the fact that this variation of detail gives a certain impact. I do like having parts in my works that are "artistically negligent", not refined to the last pixel and detail. Photo/hyperrealism is spectacular.... but it can sometimes feel a bit mechanical, unless you find a way to add artistry to it. Which doesn't mean it's any less of a skill of course, it can be really impressive.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Trichardsen In reply to lapis-lazuri [2017-03-29 01:54:25 +0000 UTC]

Yes of course being effective is a good way to go about it.
My personal approach has always been that I am so into the process that I hardly feel the hours passing.
Enjoying every second being there and not being there at the same time while drawing and suddenly 100+ hours has passed and the drawing is done.

I think it just comes down to personal preference, like for instanceΒ

DonΒ΄t know how many hours, but I drew this one over 26 days every day and then it was finished, like time didnt matter.
