Thanks. Well, I did use more vibrant colors (because I always do). But the point is not to compete with the original really. It's just to learn from it.

Actually I think I can't. Not because I don't have skills (although could be better), but because I don't think I can make art as intensively as I need to to make a living. Art can be emotionally exhausting, I cannot keep drawing intensively for long without it becoming painful, and there are sometimes periods when I don't feel like drawing at all. Then there's the problem with actually selling art. On the internet it's perhaps possible, but here in my country people are used to thinking art is for free and they aren't willing to pay for it. And I'm not good at advertising and finding customers. Finally.... even if I somehow cope with all that, I fear it would take the pleasure away from it if it becomes just work. And without the pleasure of it, art is.... nothing to me.

that sound pretty fun (: I think that unfortunately things are like that not just in your country. I think that it's a bit hard for government subsidized education to be able to prepare people for a free market, since these two things are so disconnected from each other.

lapis-lazuri In reply to Aurora-Alley [2017-07-18 10:56:16 +0000 UTC]
Hmmm.... perhaps you're right. However, in this particular situation, I see the problem elsewhere. My interests were not towards any market at all. I was in for science. However, science is brutally crippled here, it's nearly impossible to make a normal living in science and it's practically impossible to advance and develop too because the academy of sciences has fossilized itself.... So yeah, few of my friends remained there, but they have a hard time more often than not. And that is not a problem of education. Education here is ridiculous in that there is almost no practical side of it at all, but it is at least some good for one thing and that's science.
But yeah, there is a lot of fun :3

yeah working full time is kind bad.. which is why I wanna try being a freelance artist!
Mmhm, I'll start practicing with my tablet soon. It'll take some time to become as good as you at it c:

I wanted to try myself.... before. But like I said, there's problems to that. Yet another one is, I'm not just an artist. I'm an artist, a writer, a photographer, a musician.... and I need that variety in my creativity, I love all these arts, but I cannot keep doing any of them intensively for too long. And because of that I'm not exceptionally good at any of them. But I'm very happy with them as it is, I just wish I had more time and energy to spend on them....
So level design is a good compromise - it's a creative work, but usually not too demanding emotionally and mentally.
Maybe in time I find even a better compromise. I've thought of combining part time work with freelance somehow. I'm still pondering in that direction.
Awww, nice!
I actually feel like doing some more digital art too. I think you're gonna like what I have in mind

I just feel like that kinda freelancing is totally for me (: Plus, I looove all the attention and meeting new people Β I don't have artistic skills yet, but I think I have some other talents, like I'm good at becoming popular (:
I look forward to seeing what you have in mind Β

Wow this is very, very impressive! Also the whole feeling of it. You have just depicted my true home here O.O.... I also love how you made the snow glitter stronger than in the reference. I can indeed tell, that they way you have drawn it, can be very real. That is beyond words, so beautiful...
I don't have much more words either...as you say - they are pale compared our spiritual experience of these magnificent Northern Lands.
And then the technique - that is mind-blowing as well O.O
I still wanna get more into landscape drawing again too, but with the current projects- there is not much time for it...I'm happy you manage at least!

Awww, thank you! Well, you know me, I'm like corvid enough to be obsessed with SHINYYYY!!! 8D
But yeah.... the far north.... the most spiritual place I've been to. And your true spiritual home, you always roam the back of my mind when I draw such scenery.
Ah, the technique is as simplified as I can get it.... though it does develop in time. Very slowly.
Thank you, Jayme. Really means a lot.

lol, I can't do anything in 20 or 30 hours. I can just never spend that long on a single piece XD Usually it takes about 8-9 hours maximum for a photo-referenced drawing to get it to the highest level of detail and realism that I would want to achieve. But lately, I've only worked on higher detail in fantasy-based pieces. 11 hours was the latest top.

lapis-lazuri In reply to Trichardsen [2017-03-27 13:25:42 +0000 UTC]
Ugh.... *gasp* O.O 150 hours?!
Well ummm..... no way I can do even half of that. Pencil generally doesn't allow for such fine detail (unless you use mechanical, which I dropped years ago, and a large paper, which I use only rarely, for commissions). In digital you can go down to the single pixel.... and if you draw printable size like me lately, that's quite a few pixels. But quite frankly, I wouldn't have the patience, at least not anymore. Years ago it didn't bother me as much to spend a lot of time on a drawing and do loads of detail, but then I could draw in school classes and lectures and thus make better use of time Now time is shorter :/ Besides, I don't really chase such detail, it never really gave much impact. I discovered the level of detail and photorealism for me depends solely on the time spent on a drawing, but instead of spending a lot of time on tiny details that don't really change the impact that much, I prefer now to find ways to achieve the same impact without working on every pixel. Like, fine detail only where it's most important, where I want the eyes of the viewers to linger - because detail can draw and hold eyes - or where it will really strike them like "oh, look, I can even see this tiny and awesome detail". I look for ways to leave the impression of fine detail without going down to every hair and blade of grass. That's a good example of that: lapis-lazuri.deviantart.com/ar⦠Almost everyone commented on the small spikes on the tongue, but no one said anything like "but I cannot see each hair in the mane". Besides, I think if the whole picture is completely filled up with as much detail, it can make it.... too busy? It's like with focus depth, you only want sharpness in the most important ones, in the accent of the picture, and the lower detail in the more background-ish elements is not a bother and can even enhance the effect. (Though that's more true for macro and portrait photography, not really for scenic works.) So.... there's the laziness bit (but let's call it effectiveness XD ), but there's also the fact that this variation of detail gives a certain impact. I do like having parts in my works that are "artistically negligent", not refined to the last pixel and detail. Photo/hyperrealism is spectacular.... but it can sometimes feel a bit mechanical, unless you find a way to add artistry to it. Which doesn't mean it's any less of a skill of course, it can be really impressive.
