The texture reminds me of some kind of animal skin. It looks organic and suits the image. But how is it to work on?

yeah, it does look a little rawhide-ish.
it's a little tough for pen and ink (which this mostly is) I had to lay down a layer of acrylic gel before inking it so it would hold together (learned that trick the hard way).
