Description Known from fragmentary material, like most of Gondwanan theropods, Kurupi itaata is a species of brachyrostran abelisaurid native to Southeastern Brazil, more specifically the Marília Formation of the Bauru Basin. This formation dates from the Maastrichtian, between 70-66 million years ago, based on faunal composition. Kurupi probably shared the semi-arid environment of Brazil with the titanosaurians Uberabatitan, Caieiria, Baurutitan (syn.Trigonosaurus) and the Unenlagiinae Ypupiara lopai, considering that they come from the laterally equivalent and geographically close Serra da Galga formation. While the holotype, and only assigned specimen, is not in the best conditions, there are enough characteristics to assume that this was a cursorial animal, like others Late Cretaceous abelisaurids, such as Carnotaurus and Aucasaurus, judging by the tranverse processes of the proximal caudal vertebrae, which are inclined, but not as much as in Carnotaurus or Aucasaurus, indicating different locomotion strategies.
It measured approximately 5 meters long, making it a medium sized abelisaur, with a range similar to Llukalkan and Quilmesaurus.
Based on the Carnotaurus skeleton by Henrique Paes (randomdinos)
