Description

S Tier-

Godzilla (the Original): The 1954 Gojira is the original Godzilla that kicked off the entire franchise. Serving as a symbol for the dangers of nuclear power and the hubris of mankind, this is the version that introduced the King of the Monsters to the world, and where all the other Godzilla movies after it originate from. So it should not come as a surprise that this version of Godzilla would be placed in S Tier.

GMK Godzilla: The GMK Godzilla from the 2001 film Godzilla, Mothra, and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters all-out Attack, is one of the most unique versions of the Big G. The GMK Godzilla is basically the body of the original 1954 Godzilla that has been resurrected and possessed by the vengeful spirits of the people who were killed by the Japanese Military during World War II. This is the first and so far only incarnation of Godzilla to have a supernatural origin. He is also one of the most violent and (arguably) the only version of Godzilla to be truly evil.

Kiryu Saga Godzilla: While not the biggest or the most powerful, the Kiryu Saga Godzilla is definitely one of the coolest-looking versions of Godzilla. He is one of the first versions of Godzilla that I have seen on the screen, and loved it. It always brings a lot of nostalgia when I watch this Godzilla on the screen. This Godzilla's design is also incredibly popular for the character, and has been used by Toho for numerous promotional events and non-film media, like the IDW comics.

Final Wars Godzilla: The Final Wars Godzilla is considered to be one of the most powerful versions of Godzilla (but that's debatable). This Godzilla is like a combination of the Heisei Godzilla and Showa Godzilla, in that he's very effective in melee combat and has a very powerful Atomic Breath. He took on Anguirus, Rodan, and King Caesar all at once, and defeated them without needing to use his Atomic Breath. And that's not mentioning the majority of the other monsters he defeated without breaking a sweat. Definitely one of the most awesome versions of the Big G.

MonsterVerse Godzilla: The MonsterVerse Godzilla is currently considered to be the most popular version of Godzilla. After the epic failure that was Godzilla (1998), America tried again and finally got it right with this new American version of Godzilla. This Godzilla is one of the most badass versions of the Big G - but at the same time, he is also one of the most benevolent. His personality is mix of the Showa Godzilla's heroic personality and the Heisei Godzilla's more serious demeanor. The MonsterVerse Godzilla is also the second version of Godzilla to have fought King Kong after the Showa Godzilla - and unlike the Showa, the MonsterVerse Godzilla defeated Kong in the movie.

Godzilla Earth: While many people dislike the anime trilogy, they cannot deny the fact that it has given us the biggest and possibly the most powerful version of Godzilla to appear on the screen: Godzilla Earth. Standing at 318 meters in height and weighing in at 100,000 tons, Godzilla Earth is easily the biggest Godzilla to appear. Not only is he the biggest, Godzilla Earth may also be the most powerful film version of Godzilla. He survived when the U.S. Government hurled 150 nuclear bombs at him, which wiped multiple states off the map and left craters that can be seen from space. Humanity then used 2,000 nuclear bombs to split open the Himalayas and bury Godzilla under. Godzilla's response? He destroyed the bedrock of the mountain range with his Atomic Breath and resumed activity. But Godzilla Earth's most impressive feat is when he destroyed the asteroid Gorath with his Heat Ray. In the anime continuity, Gorath was 30 kilometres in diameter and had a mass comparable to Earth's Moon. It was also moving at some percentage of light speed when Godzilla Earth destroyed it, which makes this feat all the more impressive. Granted, Godzilla needed 5 years to store enough energy to accomplish this feat, but it's still impressive nonetheless.

Note: Since I consider Godzilla Filius to be Godzilla Earth's offspring, and not a different version of Godzilla, I did not put him on this Tier list.

A Tier-

Heisei Godzilla: The Heisei Godzilla is one of the most famous and one of the most powerful versions of Godzilla. While it's undeniable that this version of Godzilla is very famous and loved by fans, I'm not that fond of him. I'm not exactly sure why, but I'm not keen on putting Heisei Godzilla in S Tier. Contrary to the Showa Godzilla, the Heisei Godzilla primarily relies on his Atomic Breath to strike his opponents from a distance and rarely engages in physical brawls. Also, contrary to popular belief, the Heisei Godzilla is the only incarnation of Godzilla to specifically be stated to be a dinosaur.

Godzilla 2000: Godzilla 2000 is one of the very first versions of Godzilla I had seen. This is the first incarnation of Godzilla who's Atomic Breath is a different color; rather than being a blue beam, Godzilla 2000's Heat Ray is a fiery orange color. Honestly, because his Heat Ray is orange in color, I actually thought that Godzilla is a dragon when I first watched this movie. Still, Godzilla 2000 definitely deserves a high-tier spot.

Shin Godzilla: This version of Godzilla is the first Toho Godzilla to deviate from all his predecessors. In addition to going through several different forms of evolution, Shin Godzilla is set apart from all the other incarnations because of his unique use of the Atomic Breath. Rather than shooting a blue beam from his mouth like all the other versions, Shin Godzilla's signature weapon initially takes the form of a cloud of smoke exhaled from his mouth and then a stream of fire. From there, he focuses the fire into a narrow purple Heat Ray which slices through buildings like a lightsaber. Like Godzilla 2000, rather than a blue beam, Shin Godzilla's Heat Ray is purple in color. Even more impressive, Shin Godzilla can also fire numerous purple beams from in between his dorsal fins, and also fire another beam from the tip of his tail. Definitely worthy to be in a high-tier spot.

Godzilla Ultima: The most recent version of Godzilla to appear on the big screen. Having 4 different forms that pay homages to classic Toho monsters (Titanosaurus, Varan, and Gorosaurus), it's easy to tell that Godzilla Ultima took a lot of inspiration from Shin Godzilla. But to be honest, I really love Godzilla Ultima's Atomic Breath - particularly those gigantic blue rings that materialize in front of his mouth, all aligning in a row. I love how his Atomic Breath goes between the rings, which expand in size when the blast goes through them. Definitely one of the coolest and most unique variations of the Monster King's signature weapon. But the thing that makes Godzilla Ultima especially unique is that he is not from Earth - this version of Godzilla (along with most of the other kaiju in Singular Point) is an extradimensional entity hailing from another universe. Godzilla Ultima also radiates a reality-warping crimson dust made of Archetype, which turns any water around it blood-red, fills the air like an ash cloud, starts covering affected areas like red snow, and eventually gives rise to anomalous fleshy plant life.

Godzilla (GxM): I don't have much to say about the Godzilla from the movie Godzilla vs Megaguirus. He's basically a more powerful version of Godzilla 2000. This Godzilla's most impressive feat is destroying a miniature black hole fired by the Dimension Tide on two occasions. However, his fight with Megaguirus is what truly earns him an A-tier spot in my opinion. When he was unable to defeat Megaguirus through sheer brute force alone, Godzilla gradually began to learn and memorize her attack patterns, allowing him to exploit openings when they arise.

B Tier-

Showa Godzilla: To be honest, I've never been too fond of the Showa Godzilla, mostly because I grew up with the Millennium Godzilla movies, and I wasn't particularly fond of the more lighthearted, goofy entries in the series. Nevertheless, the Showa Godzilla definitely deserves to be in B-tier because of his awesome fights with other monsters. Showa Godzilla's most impressive feat is when he used his Atomic Breath to fly in Godzilla vs Hedorah. And of course, let's not forget his victory dance in Invasion of Astro-Monster. Lol. All in all, while not as fond as the other versions of Godzilla on this list, Showa Godzilla still earns a decent spot on the Tier list.

C Tier- None

D Tier- None

F Tier-

TriStar Godzilla: Honestly, I don't think I should be putting this version on the Tier list,  but I guess I had no choice. Naturally, the TriStar Godzilla goes in F tier for obvious reasons. Also, I'm not sure how many people know this, but the trademark for Zilla has lapsed. This reason for this is because there's now a new American Godzilla on the block (the MonsterVerse Godzilla), and Toho knew that people will pay attention to that one and ignore Zilla altogether.
