Aren't they absolutely irresistible??Two of my friend Rob's cats were snuggling on his front porch. Lucky for me I had my camera with me!

First off I'll start by saying, this has the cute factor going on.
I think it is nicely composed, there is nothing to distract you from the cuteness of the cats snuggling up to each other which is good. I do like the overall feel of this picture e.deviantart.com/emoticons/s/s⦠" width="15" height="15" alt="
The photo itself is not an original idea but what I do like is the artist did seem to put some thought into it and not make it just a happy snap.
The only real thing I can see which doesn't affect the photo too much is just a bit of noise but besides that, a job well done.
I marked high for impact because I think it's the kind of photo that could be displayed in a calendar, greeting card etc.

I am tempted to use this critique to analyse the madness that is DA and kitten photos, but I think that would be a waste of time. Instead I will try to be impartial.
The shot is very 'cute' and implies a strong bond between the too cats which is indearing. The shot is well composed and exposured. the cats are well located int he frame, and balance eachother nicely. Interest exists throughout the frame and there are no major distractions.
There is some visable image noise, but its not a major problem. The white balance is a bit too cold. I would correct this in processing.
My main issues with the image dont really come with the execution of the image, I think its very good. But rather that this is just another cute cat shot. I know people love cats and this shot displays a good degree of technical competance and an eye for compostion, but ultimately there are so many shots like this, and they are so easy to make that really I think it would be good to try something a little more adventurous. This shot with some dramatic side lighting might have been interesting for example, although no doubt it wouldnt be as popular.

I agree that yes there are a ton of kitten shots on DA but one shouldn't critique on that as much as the overall merits of the photography itself.
Agreed with the noise, good point, on the impact though, I think that has a LOT of impact myself and I can easily see this kind of shot being used commercially on greeting cards, calendars, etc. Side lighting would be interesting to see done.

maybe you are right, but my originality scale goes from 0.5, totally unoriginal in every way, to 5 totally original. Whats the point in having 5 stars if you only use 3 or 4? Again I would reiterate to you that I do not beleive photos should be judged at all on originality, yet if I am forced to do so, I will do so honestly. I feel my critique was fair and balanced. On impact I am marking on how the shot has an impact on me, I wont speculate on the impact it has on others, although, looking at the number of favourites it seems considerable.
I could also see this image being used commercially, although the technical problems could be an issue.

Ya I just call into question the 1/2 star thing, that surprised me, I don't think you want to offend the artist.
I mean I could understand IF it was a 110 snapshot out of a car window while moving LOL

originality is a very different thing to what I beleive you are referring to. I dont want to offend the artist. I just think that if originality is to be marked at all it should be marked honestly. Its almost impossible to take a truelly original photos, but htis shot is far from original. What is up for dispute is whether originality should be a criteria AT ALL. I think not, in fact I think the whole star rating sytem is devisive.

Yes i know the internet is full with kitty cuteness...but hey! there's nothing wrong with it. And this picture is a fine addition to it
Well, most baby animals are irrestible to us humans. And i fully understand people who completely freak out of this natural cuteness. But especially sleeping kittens are THE weakness to most homo sapiens today.
Most of us are addicted to this special cat "magic" and they know that. We don't own the house cats, they own us. And it feels damn good, doesn't it?

Nothing but the truth.Β I've had cats as buds for a really long time and never really understood why I went from preferring dogs to liking the company of arrogant, self-centered cats.
But I did.Β I've found that cats will never be willing to love you with the wonderful, easily earned love a dog will, but that a cat will be as loyal and care as much, he or she will just make you earn it.
And like the love of a child or a lover, it is well worth the earning.Β This picture brought me a smile and I much needed one.Β Thank you.
