This is great! Wonderful job! I love the beard. Is there a story behind this guy, or just a random creation?

That's an awesome design :0 Is he a tree-wizard or did he accidentally magic himself like that?

Oo, he's more like a tree-wizard. Don't make fun of his apple. He gets rather sensitive about it.

I'm liking the tree moustache/beard thing you have going on with this character, lots of sense of personality and expression. Nice clean technique.

Thank you! I had made several attempts to try different arrangements of anatomy and tried to figure out what he would look like stomping about and wreaking havoc before settling on this one. I also had to take some time out to teach myself a little bit about light interaction before I could do a nice colouring job on him, and I also wound up doing some last minute adjustments when I realized that my monitor's gamma correction was way outta whack. It seems to look OK on 3 different LCD panels, so I guess I finally have another stage of the colouring process figured out...

I know how that is, the monitors in my university shockingly display my homepages image, to the point of a putrid yellow glare which is somewhat annoying when you're trying to show someone your site. I'd like to see more of your work dude, you have a hell of a lot of scraps, makes me rethink my submission policy to only putting up the 'best ones'.

well, then you did a nice job. Are you creating characters for a comic or some sort of story?
I also was wondering if you have any more 10 minute tutorials on the way?

I've got one comic book that I'd like to make, but I'm still learning the basics of screenwriting and character creation... I've gone through 3 books on graphic storytelling for comics, one on writing screenplays, another one on writing novels, and I'm halfway through one more creating memorable characters. I'll probably dive into and apply what I've learned when I finish that last book.
I've uploaded tutorials 8 and 9 -- and will probably do a 10th tomorrow. The funny thing is now that I'm dealing with backgrounds (which is really the application of all my techniques) I suddenly don't have a lot to say anymore. I'm suddenly worried about the intellectual content of future tutorials so I have to think hard about each basic topic I want to explain... I don't want my tutorials to degenerate into a mere showing of process, i.e.: "Look! Watch me draw! Okay! Now you do it!" gragh. I hate that type of video/tutorial.

Well, I would definently like to see your graphic novel when you create it, it's nice that you consider every part essential.
Lol, I think tutorials that show the process and explain little are less helpful than reading the information so I agree with you. I'm glad you're putting effort into these tutorials, I enjoy them.

I wound up totally redoing episode 9 -- which stretched into a 40-minute tutorial, but I think it turned out to be a good process for people to follow... They're still processing up on YouTube but if you get the chance to watch them, I'd be really interested to hear what you think. I hope I'm not being too vague on some points or failing to explain myself clearly as I work...
Maybe I should include an isolated lesson on composition next, before getting into figure drawing...

Alright, I'll be sure to check them out, thanks for updating me on that.
A lesson on composition would be nice, since you're doing background lessons it would be appropriate.

Hmm... I think I can make a short series exclusively focusing on composition. Each episode covers a single principle but shows different ways to use it, and each episode afterwards uses combinations of composition.
It's really good for being able to start a drawing, and getting something you can bring to a satisfying conclusion (ready for nice linework and colours, etc...)
