Description

"I'm waiting for you, honeyboy, but don't make me wait too long."

A picture of Brady Hartsfield (aka "The Mercedes Killer") and the illusion of his mother, Deborah Ann Hartsfield. These characters are from Stephen King's novel, Mr. Mercedes.

Mr. Mercedes is the first installment of Stephen King's Bill Hodges Trilogy. This picture is inspired by a particular scene from the book and this dark piano song, Night of Rain.

Two scenes in the book chilled me to the bones. Since the novel is a suspense thriller, more spoilers will only ruin your reading experience. So I'll just leave it here.

Feel free to share your thoughts about the book if you've already read it!

Read all three, Finders Keepers I couldn't put down, but in retrospect Mr. Mercedes was my favorite overall. End of Watch kinda spoiled it a little bit for me, since the scariest part of either previous story was that they were entirely possible and had a place in reality. With the entrance of supernatural powers, it sorta blurred the realistic image for me. If Finders Keepers wasn't part of the same universe, I'd say that's my favorite, but just because we ARE in the same universe and you got over half way through the book before even mentioning Hodges and my gal Hollyberry, the first will be favored in my mind. Amazing series though, I'd definitely recommend to anyone and I hope I didn't spoil too much.

I totally agree with you about the supernatural part. Brady Hartsfield was a mystery in Mr. Mercedes - he was scary because people like Brady do exist in our real world. Then Brady suddenly gained those superpowers in the sequels, and the whole story became kind of weird and unrealistic. Maybe Stephen King just wanted to rant about teenagers' Internet/game addiction nowadays by adding those extreme superpowers and suicide scenes in End of Watch?

Nevertheless, the trilogy was still an entertaining read. I actually loved how Stephen King ended this series. It wasn't a typical "everyone lives happily ever after" ending, but the character development was well done (especially Holly's.) Also, the book covers are beautiful.

I was joking with my friends over how the trilogy was finished, with Hartsfield having a fitting end, taste of his own medicine it seems, and then after all the shit Hodges went through, it's the anticlimactic pancreatic cancer. But Holly was strong and you're totally right, her character development was something of which the likes I had never experienced before.

I thought it was quite fitting to give Hodges such anticlimactic death since the scenario was pretty realistic. Not every hero has to die in a typical "heroic" setting (like a melee combat or something involving explosions.) Since pancreatic cancer can easily kill off a patient, the disease turns out to be a much more scary opponent than Brady Hartsfield himself.

And yes, it was great to witness Holly's growth during the whole trilogy. I also had a good time reading scenes when Jerome was around. Hodges was fortunate to meet those two and befriend them.

Awesome!

I just finished the whole trilogy several days ago. For some reason I really liked the cover design of the third novel. The art concept is creepy but those colors are just so beautiful.

I know right?! It's right up there with 'The Shining' and 'Pet Cemetary' for me!

Cool! I'm a coward, so I never get the opportunity to finish The Shining. It seems like a very, very scary movie. Guess I'll just read the novel version once I gather enough courage.

Or maybe I can try Pet Sematary first. Sounds like a good one.

No worries I'm not spoiling anything else but it got hard to read after that so fair warning.

Thanks for the heads up! Since I've already had a good scare while reading a child death scene in Mr. Mercedes, guess I'll survive this one as well. Probably.
