Description This is taking a lot longer than I'd hoped... Still a lot to do.
No rigging on the ship yet and I need to add something in the foreground to add some scale to the ship...And need to think of a name for the ship.
Oil and acrylic on canvas 26" by 35"

Yup it's amazing. I too am bothered by the buildings at the water's edge.

It just seems an unlikely place to see them and they don't seem to fit in with the Awesome castle on the hill ... I'm picturing a savage storm completely flooding out the houses and the lack of some kind of surge break or a serious network of docks just makes it look odd.

The sky, ship and water are just wicked though Lee. It's a great painting so far.

Thanks.... I will put something there in place of the houses.... I'm thinking a ship anchored or moored up.
Sorry I've not answered sooner.... been having big problems with the computer. Had to reinstall Xp on my system.

Don't worry about it Lee ... I am the worst at procrastinating to comment or reply so I know how it can be.

Very nice work, but there are various areas that could be improved. The thing that jumps out at me as wrong is the inconsistent design of the ship. For the most part it looks like a galleon of Tudor date (like the Mary Rose or something from the Spanish Armada), with the upturned prow and prominent stern castle for example, and external framework. However the upper part of the back end looks like that of a ship of the line from Napoleonic times (like HMS Victory) with the three lanterns and the neat rows of windows. It really is quite incongrous. There is also an issue of proportion, over all. At the momet the ship seems to be sailing past a model village, while the perspective on the castle looks wrong somehow.

Thanks. I used the body of a medieval ship.. (here's the reference photo [link] ) but wanted it looking like a mid seventeenth century ship with the windows and lanterns at the back.. I know a ship fanatic would go mad at this design.... but I'm still going through design issues with some of the ship.
As for the scale of the houses... crhino and a friend pointed that out also... so I'm thinking of adding another ship moored up instead of the houses.

The trouble is a mid seventeenth century ship would have a rather different shape to that. More like this: [link]

The lower row of windows of the officers' cabins at the sterns would be level with the second lowest of the gun decks. But its your painting...

Lee, this is staggeringly good. It's going to be quite something special when it's finished.

Thanks.. I did a drawing a while back but I had a few jobs on at the time... And now I've lost interest with this for the moment .... I'll come back to this another day when my inspiration returns.

It's coming along nicely.
Here's the inevitable critique though.
My main observation is that group of houses on the beach. I think it throws the scale off, way too much. The distance between the ship and houses is too small for the ship to be that size. I think it wouldn't take anything away from the pic, if you got rid of them altogether. Plus, they might be in trouble at high tide too.
I like the softness of the castle and hill side, they work really well, and the water looks good too.
Obviously, the ship isn't quite finished, but I like how you've done the subtle detail in the sails.

Thanks... I've had the same comment from a friend... Been thinking I might add a boat moored up rather than the house's being there.

Looking beautiful! I love ships like this. Went to a Sail festival in San Diego recently. They had all sorts of old ships on display and floating back and forth in the harbor. That's what this reminded me of. Of course this one seems a bit older than what they had. I think their ships came from the 19th and early 20th century.

Thanks... I've always been fascinated with old ships but never brave enough to paint one....and this will be in memory of my grandfather who was in the new Zealand merchant navy towards the end of the second world war.
