This very much reminds me of a scene from Neil Gaiman's Sandman, somewhere around the second volume. But this is a totally different thing, I rather like the concept the neutral and pale colours too.

The scene was there was this man, who was obviously not human but appeared human anyway. He took a cutter and then cut down his chest and then pulled at his skin, revealing his rib cage (like in your drawing) and then birds came out of him.
The birds were bad because they bothered people while they slept and messed with their dreams, or something along the line.
That entire scene had little or no dialogue, so it was both a cool scene and artwork at the same time.
