Some Ring-Tailed Lemur ( Lemur Catta ) facts:
- Ring-Tailed Lemurs are the most well-known of the Lemur species, and are commonly seen in zoos. They're fairly uncommon in their wild home of Madagascar, mostly due to illegal capture, hunting, and habitat destruction. In fact, there are more lemurs in zoos in the state of Texas than there are on the entire island of Madagascar!
- These Lemurs are also commonly seen as pets, which is very surprising due to the fact that they are the most aggressive of ALL Lemur species!
- With all Lemur species, the females are dominant. They get the best food, best sleeping spot, and are completely in charge. Females are very aggressive and highly territorial. While Lemur species in general are known for being very gentle, the ring-tailed females are the exact opposite. When females in two different troops go to fight over territory, they have been known to bite off body parts!
- The male ring-tailed Lemurs are much more docile, as rank and territory mean nothing to them. Usually, the most aggressive they get is when they are up against a rival male. The two males will do something called a Stink-Fight. They grab their long, striped tails, and move their hands over it frantically, using a little spurred scent gland on their wrists to cover their tail in their scent. Once it's got a good, strong odor on it, they raise their tails above their heads and flick the end around wildly, which is known as stink-bombing. Eventually, one of them can't take the stink, so he backs off, leaving the other male to his victory.
