Description The great thing about interlace art is that it forces you to focus on the least detailed portion of the page, which in this case is the text. The characters read around the circle from the top trilobite clock-wise to its companion. These lines are from a verse in the nirvana sutra which was found on the wikipedia article on the "Iroha" pangram , which is what I originally wanted to put in the text. The verses are here in their original form with the translation found in the article:

諸行無常
是生滅法
生滅滅已
寂滅為楽

That everything is impermanent
Is the way all things come into and go out of existence.
It is when these processes are over
That we see true happiness in nirvana.

The characters are stylized in a faux celtic font style as best as I can convert it. In the large circle the characters read water, wood, fire, metal, with earth in the center. The version of earth used here is the Japanese rather than Chinese. The elements are both from the four quadrant gods and the feng shui, only it is set in the system of the cardinal gods (all in the Japanese version) with Genbu as water, colored black, symbolizing winter, north, and depicted as a tortoise (in this case sea turtle) and snake; next is Seiryuu as wood, colored blue or green, symbolizing spring, east, and depicted as a dragon; next is Suzaku as fire, colored red, symbolizing summer, south, and depicted as a vermilion bird or phoenix; next is Byakko as metal, colored white, symbolizing autumn, west, and depicted as a white tiger; lastly in the center is the yellow dragon as earth, colored yellow, symbolizing the center, and depicted as, of course, a yellow dragon. The animals in the circle are all living: they are as follows, a sea lamprey, a salmon, an aye-aye, a grub, two beard pulling men (can't get anymore traditional than that), a red-ruffed lemur, a fossa, and millipedes (which I unwittingly made to represent an inappropriate symbol). The animals on the outer-circle are all extinct. They are from the top lunaspis with gemuendina in the armored fins, two trilobites, dimetrodon, euparkeria capensis, rhamphorhynchus gemmingi, archaeopteryx lithographica, ovirapter philoceratops, ambulocetus natans, and procoptodon goliath. Paleo-art referenced from sources such as J. Conway, Heather "Kyoht" Luterman, Charles R. Knight, and [link] .

Atually, the svastika/crux gammata is a positive symbol in Buddhist and Hindu spiritual beliefs, so it's quite fitting that it was included in a mandala with the nirvana sutra. It is a sun-symbol, whereas the counter-clockwise sauvastika/manji is a moon symbol. The svastika symbolizes good fortune and things like that. I believe, though I may be wrong, that the swirling shape of the svastika also was taken to represent the Hindu and Buddhist belief in reincarnation.

Your pencil work is amazing. I have no idea how you keep the knotwork so balanced. o_o

Thanks.

Yeah the swastika is a positive symbol; as it is represented by the trilobites, exactly as you had pointed out, quite often used at the beginning and the end of Buddhist sutras just like it is in the picture. The millipede make a swastika too, which can be misconstrued as the Nazi symbol (seeing as it's tilted), which is what I was referring to since I've never seen any Buddhist (inparticular) anything with a tilted swastika. But interestingly enough, the swastika motif actually does appear in knotwork, within the actual interlace, as Aidan Meehan shows, which is something I didn't know until getting his books.

Thanks, also,on the compliment on the pencil. The key, I think, to making a balanced knot is by taking stock of what the shape of your space is and marking out spaces appropriately.

Thanks. I'm hoping to have the whole thing colored by the end of this weekend, since I have some plans for this piece. I hope you take a look at it when it's completely done.

It took quite a while. . mostly in planning as once you get the hang of the knotwork part it's easy to keep track of.

Really an amazing piece...and it deserves so much more attention here. You put the illuminators of the Book of Kells to shame.

Haha. . well I don't know if I'd go that far. Besides they started it and I'd be nothing without 'em. I'm actually looking forward to coloring it seeing as it's going to be with my usual neurotic way of coloring. . in natural media within in a small space.... because I'm insane.

Great work, I love that kind of intricate things.
It is quite curious to see Chinese and Celtic patterns together, but I know how long it takes to do that kind of job, so congratulations.
I'm eager to see the finished version!

THanks. I love to put different cultures together. . I guess it has something to do with me being half Asian and half white and still wanting to show my appreciation for both east and west. I'll be sure to post it one I finish it. It promises to be very time consuming.
