O.M.G. I hate you. When you mentioned stippling in passing you never mentioned you were this good!!! i have lots to improve on T__T any tips on stippling? I'm fairly decent with crosshatching in pen but stippling has always stumped me....particularly on how to vary the dot sizes, how close/far apart to keep them etc...

LeoEyes In reply to Crystalia [2008-03-08 22:06:21 +0000 UTC]

Well stippling can certainly be a challenging technique, both in practice and in patience . I find it fun though. For my stippling technique, I ussually very lightly sketch out my subject in pencil first, then use a little bit of faint ink lines to establish where everything is. Some people don't like this and say you shouldn't use lines at all.. but I find it gives the picture a much cleaner look.

I generally don't vary the dot size at all, I ussually use a .005 pen or sometimes something smaller. I first pick a small area to work on. Then I overly a base coat so to speak. The lightest contrast, before I build it up more and more with more dots to get the darker contrasts. The farther you keep the dots apart the lighter the shade, the closer they are the darker the shade. Using my picture, or sometimes a reference I visualize the contrast i that particular area and try to follow it.

Hope that makes sense and helps you out

I prefer using lines too.... I actually tried doing it without lines and it turned out horrible Thanks for the advice, I'll definitely take it into consideration the next time I try out the stippling technique

:] it's very nice. I have some pandas that I did for a project in my AP art class last year that I stippled. I've decided to take a break from it for a long time just because of how tedious it can be.

What kind of pen did you use?

LeoEyes In reply to kumori-fennikusu [2007-08-04 17:05:42 +0000 UTC]

Thanks it did take quite awhile but I enjoyed doing it. I used a .005 micron pen for this.

cool. Small pens like that are always the best for pen/ink works. I usually use a 005 Zig Millennium pen because they're the easiest to find lol.

I agre, the smaller the better I've found for detailed work like this . I also like to use Mars pens and have a few Rapidograph pens. It really just depends what kind of work I'm doing when I pick which pen to use.

ya. I like the Zig Pens because you can get colored ones too. I've considered trying a colored pen and ink with red/yellow/blue just to see how it turns out.

This is almost hard to believe that it is in pen and ink. It came out really nice. I would have been sooooo pissed if I messed up!

That... is a whole helluva lot of dots. Must've taken an immense amount of patience but it came out great. You've got some really nice pen and ink work here, but cats are more my thing than reptiles, so this one strikes me most. Keep up the great work!

Simply wonderful! I love the fidelity to form and the way that you have utilized the ink to convey shadow and light.

Although, that being said, it is rather disheartening to see an artist slipping down that sorted path to insanity.

Ink will do that, ya know...

Keep up the fine work, LeoEyes!! Looks like a fave to me!

After awhile of working on this I think I started to see spots

WSTopDeck In reply to LeoEyes [2006-12-05 00:13:46 +0000 UTC]

Really? Damn...I've had some lessons, but I suck at it...or maybe I'm just not patient enough...

Lol!

LeoEyes In reply to WSTopDeck [2006-12-05 02:00:59 +0000 UTC]

hehe yep, I had regular art lessons in like highschool and have had watercolors lessons. But nothing with pen and ink. My dad did a little with it though when he was my age.. so maybe it runs in the family?

hehe either I'm patient.. or just nuts. Maybe both?

WSTopDeck In reply to LeoEyes [2006-12-05 04:26:57 +0000 UTC]

Hehe, who knows? It could be genetic!

Hmmmmmm......I'm gonna say both Cause there's only so much that patience can do without the craziness!
