Well, I still have my obsession with King Candy. Because of that, it’s made me think a lot about Marie Antoinette and I’ve grown so fascinated! I suppose she has become this iconic figure for me of femininity, cakes and sweets, decadence, luxury etc. I suppose it’s because I can’t help but see a similarity between them. After all, Marie supposedly said “Let them Eat Cake” and KC always says “Have some Candy!” - So it’s almost little wonder why I had the idea to combine the two!

Also I like doing picture like this. This along with my previous valentines picture, allows me to research alot of different referances and get so much inspiration in order to get an idea of what I want to put into the picture. So these are my inspirations:
Of course one inspiration was to make in the same style as Marie and dress him as a French, Georgian aristocrat.
The Georgians had some insane wigs! I mean they would reach the ceiling sometimes! Also adding all sorts of things like flowers, feathers and even vegetables to decorate them. Obviously I got the idea to make his wig out of Candy floss. I got to chuck in all sorts of candy accessories to decorate the wig. Ironically, in the same vein as Vanellope Von Sweets. Most notably the candy floss handle sticking out. At one point to fit more with the cake style I was going to have his wig be made of ice cream. And instead of the hair curl, I was going to have a droplet of melted ice cream sliding down his face and neck. But I took another look at Marie’s hair and it looked very fluffy and so I thought that Candy Floss would be more fitting. And of course adding his own crown to make him recognizable.
Since this was a different costume from the movie, I had a look at some of the abandoned concept art of King Candy. They showed him with similar costumes but otherwise all very different. In one he was going to have this candy necklace in place of a watch chain on his waistcoat. So I took said necklace and put it in the wig. I think the real Georgians would have used pearls. I made his waistcoat to have more holes and frills, much like his sleeves in the film. In some early drawings his waistcoat was the same.
I looked up various types of cakes. Despite it being King Candy, I needed to keep reminding myself that the MAIN confectionary had to be a cake theme. (Because of Marie) I even made the curls in his wig into chocolate Swiss rolls.
I looked up various candy style makeup and hair to get a feel of the colours and ways to use Candy on the body. I know that Georgians would have powdered their faces white and have other heavy make-up. But I didn’t add it to KC because his cheeks are already so lovely and rosy, and also to make him look less like a pantomime dame.
I was originally going to have him lean on a cane, until I remembered that the Georgians used to have masked balls. So I gave him a mask in one hand. The mask has a candy cane handle. Also I thought was appealing was I made it look like frosting was dripping down it. I even added a peacock feather to the mask because A) I LOVE peacocks and B) you can’t have decadent picture without a splash of peacock.
I had a while trying to think of what cake to place in his hand. At first I was going to make the cake pink. But I wanted it to look like you would really want to eat it! Then I moved onto a Victoria sponge. But the problem with that was a Victoria Sponge always reminds me of here in Blighty, and this is meant to have a more French feel. Eventually I settled on the classic favourite of a chocolate fudge cake with many layers. I was going to have a strawberry on top. But somehow it didn’t look as good as without. Not to mention I made the fudge frosting looks so thick and I was proud of the layer pattern on top. I didn’t want to spoil it. Then, I looked up cupcakes. Because cupcakes are cute and so is King Candy!
I took another glance around King Candy’s throne room. As some of the patterning makes it look like a cake. Although on a first impression I think his castle reminds me of those pink wafer bars for some reason.
While glamorous, Marie was famously meant to be very extravagant and rather selfish. After all, that’s partly why she got her head cut off. So it allowed me the chance to give Candy a more devious expression than usual. Which I love doing!
The Georgian style meant I couldn’t do those massive pantaloons that he usually wears. So I had to use my imagination when it came to figuring out his… natural figure. X3
For some reason I ended up looking at the dresses from American McGee’s Alice. I certainly hope to do a picture where I mix Wreck-it Ralph with Alice in Wonderland!
Also looking at the Georgian period has given me the best excuse to watch episode after episode of Blackadder the Third!
That and I’ve been watching some more videos of Leilani Joy’s artwork. And she did this awesome Marie-inspired candy picture, so I guess that’s one reason for my obsession. Her picture here [link] Video of her picture here [link]
The hardest job I had was deciding the colours. So I think with Candy I think of pinks, blues and lilacs. So I ran with that for a short while. But eventually I realised that this is King Candy, so I gave him the colours of his regular outfit but re-worked a few bits here and there.
