Thank you Rita! It is a combination of photo and painted from life. I laid in my bathtub and took reference photos for my hair, and how the water moved around my face and features. I used the photos to really just give me a sense of how things were, then exaggerated some of the textures, and used artist's license and then turned the painting on its side and painted from life to get more of the subtleties that photos ( or at least my sorry excuse for photos) don't seem to get on my face and body.
