"This can't be happening, this can't be happening!" Madoa cried. Her and Zira were searching the cave for Mheetu, though Zira was only pretending to search. She knew very well where Mheetu was, and had to fight off a grin at the thought.
"He couldn't of gone far, he's just a baby!" Madoa was frantic, and very close to losing it.
"Maybe he got outside?" Zira hinted.
"Outside?! He's barely old enough to crawl!" Madoa whined. just then, the two lionesses could hear a pained cry from outside. obviously, the hunting party had returned; and they had made a discovery.
Madoa rushed out the mouth of the cave, commanding the remaining of the cubs wait inside. Zira trotted after, struggling not to look too unbothered. She walked into the glow of the moon just in time to watch the silhouette of a lioness charge at Madoa's form.
"You fucking BITCH!" Sarafina roared. She slapped her paw across Madoa's unexpecting face, causing the grey lioness to recoil with her own roar. Zira rushed forward and aimed a swipe back at Sarafina, who in turn jumped out of the way. She roared again as the rest of the hunting party caught up with her to both defend her and hold her back.
"you were supposed to be watching him!" Sarafina sobbed through her rage. "How could you let this happen?!"
"What are you on about, you wretched cunt!? How DARE you hit my Madoa!?" Zira growled. She didn't even care about the true situation anymore, her focus was entirely on the fact that Sarafina had dared to strike Madoa.
"Have you not even realized my cub isn't in your care?! its because he's dead, he's dead because of you!" Sarafina tried to lurched towards the queen, but was held back by Sarabi and Naanda. Madoa began to sob, both from pain and guilt.
"That is NO reason to strike your pride sister!" Zira snarled and raised her head to tower over Sarafina. She noticed Nala, who was very obviously pregnant, get down in an aggressive stance. Sarabi began trying to de escalate without earning Zira's wrath, knowing that with Scar away it would be her word against the queen's.
"Your highness, you agreed to watch the cubs! How did Mheetu get away long enough to fall?" the former queen pleaded. She kept her head pressed against Sarafina's chest to both comfort and control her.
"My eye! Zira, She got my eye!" Madoa cried. Zira looked down, and was horrified to see the amount of blood running down her fur. while the cuts weren't big or deep, it was obvious that one of Sarafina's claws had managed to scratch poor Madoa's eyeball.
"A cub too young to help anyone is no tragedy compared to the loss of a huntress's skills!" Zira said, putting a paw under Madoa's chin. she lifted her head up to get a better look at the wound. The hunting party was audibly shocked at this statement, and Naanda wasn't able to keep her tongue.
"A baby died, Zira! A baby! You've never lost a cub so you can't begin to understand how Sarafina feels," She argued, rubbing her chin on Sarafina empathetically. Zira looked at her with a scoff.
"You don't have to take her side just because you couldn't protect your son, either" Zira spat. Naanda's eyes widened and she began to snarl. an uproar of 'how dare you' and 'you cant be serious' rose from the party as both Naanda and Sarafina sobbed. Sarabi couldn't take it anymore, and let out a mighty roar while getting between Zira and the rest of the lionesses.
"We cannot make judgement until the king returns!" She declared. "Let us take Madoa to have her wound treated, and then we will have a ceremony for-" Sarabi struggled not to break and cry along with her pride sisters, "-for our lost Mheetu."
The hunting party was far from happy with this conclusion, and made it clear as they all stormed away. Nala helped her mother away, pained wails filling the night air. Sarabi sighed and turned to look back at Zira. The look on the queen's face sent chills down Sarabi's spine. it was cold, calculating, as if Zira was thinking about how to properly remove her spine.
"You're no queen anymore, Sarabi." she said. Madoa was still sobbing into her paw, and she kept a gently grip on her face with her long, black claws. "It doesn't suit you to act so much like one."
