I tried some Momo redesigns, since i know a lot of people dont like her hero outfit. I dont really have much of a problem with her current design other than its a little bland compared to the other heroes.I wantedΒ to give her a theme but didnt want to stray too far from her original design. She still as to expose a lot of skin for her quirk but i wanted to add something that would make her recognizable as a hero.

There is a couple examples of how NOT to "redesign" a existing character, like when some people tried to redesign Momo (not referring to the Momo fromΒ To Love-Ru) but failed to taken account about her practical use (since her Quirk is creation) or when someone decided to do a fan redesign of Kasumi Yoshizawa (a new character for Persona 5 The Royal)'s costume because "Atlus is horny", but doesn't realized that Kazumi is aΒ Gymnast.
and don't get me started with Samus Aran's "fan redesigns that doesn't respect the original" sticks...why did i use the word "Stick"?
but yeah, most of the "redesigns or improving the original" tends to regress rather than improving (while disrespecting the original design at the same time). thankfully, we're not talking about "reboots" or giving a official new outfit but rather fan art's intentions.

I think so long as the artist takes into account the original vision and does not insult it out right then its fine. after all its just fanart. I just prefer to to stray closer to the source material than most.Β
Personally I think the Kasumi fan redesign is fine bc honestly she looks good either way.
What annoys me is the whole "i fixed it attitude" and the implication that the original design is less good bc she's of the amount of skin shown.
Also its a lazy photoshop edit so it really is lazy on top of everything else.
When it comes to fan redesigns or even official redesigns it really does change depending on the artists interpretation, and how much the artist wants to consider the original design. Also thinking about how the redesign would affect and change the character is important, because presentation is a big aspect of their personality i.e. if they spend a lot of their time fighting maybe give them some scars and dents in their battle armour.
I'm not sure if we've seen the same samus redesigns but i appreciate the ones where she has shorter hair and less make up bc her gender isn't a really big part of her character since she's in power armour most of the time. but i can also like original Samus at the same time bc those are both different interpretations of the same character concept. One characterizes her as more practical and someone who doesn't care about how they look and the other is meant to elicit a sense of surprise when the bad-ass bounty hunter is actually really beautiful underneath, Both are valid.Β
I actually just happen to really enjoy the balancing act of keeping it close to the original vision and adding more of my ideas to the character but i also appreciate the artists that are brave enough to make big deviations. I mean that's the great thing about art we all have our own way of approaching the same idea. I find it really interesting.
As long as an artist isn't being rude with their words and is redesigning something in good faith i dont think there's really such thing as a bad interpretation. maybe bad ways of executing a concept, but even official designs make that mistake sometimes.Β

I actually really like her original design and find find it plenty practical. I appreciate to see a redesign that keeps that in mind and doesn't write of the original as "shameful fanservice."

Thats what i was going for. I still think there must have been better ways to maximize her quirk and kind of keep her own personality in mind.

This is really cute, I love it! I'm also glad she has a proper shirt, that's gotta be more comfy that the bodysuit she wears ;v;
Maybe to store her encyclopedia she'd have a little strap or something on her shorts? I've seen in some fantasy art people have holsters for magic books so maybe she'd have something like that
That's the only thing I might add though, this design is really cute and I like it a lot!!

Also yeah thank you! i knew i was forgetting something. I kinda forgot about her book, since i think she uses it only once (and only in the anime if im not mistaken) But yeah that's a really good idea! I should incorporate that if ever i come back to this.Β
