Description The rut is on. I was in the yard trying to get some Blue Jay shots and this guy came in with his head down hot on the trail of a doe in heat that must have passed through during the night. Oblivious to me till he got within ten yards then he turned and walked back into the field where I could get a shot. Nasty wound on his back suggests he has been in a recent fight.

Great photo! I am an artist and I was wondering if you would give me permission to use your photo as a reference in a painting. I would give you credit for it. My website is ppendergast.com. Thanks, Patty

Great photo, the rut is on here as well. I am going to guess that wound is from an arrow rather then a fight with another deer. Probably someone in a tree stand not quite calculating the way an arrow flies when pointing downward. That or a very good dip by the buck at just the right second.

Thanks for the comment. That's what I thought at first, an arrow wound, but I have had a closer look at it and the wound runs parallel to the spine then cuts across in another direction. An arrow would be traveling in one direction only. I think he just tangled with the wrong buck.

It's hard for me to see the path of the wound in the picture, but I have seen some of the modern arrows do some really crazy things, especially at the speeds they fly at now. Having said that, I have seen some bucks literally tear each other to pieces so I would agree with you on what caused this wound. Funny thing is usually a third buck comes in and scoops the doe while the other two are fighting to the death over her.
