Description Important-ish edit at the bottom of my rambling

3 years ago today, I had an MRI showing the reason why I had been sick for at least the 4 or 5 months beforehand. It diagnosed an arachnoid cyst, the approximate size of a tennis ball/peach in the base of my skull, preventing my spinal fluid from circulating correctly throughout my spinal cord and head. ***(((My normal doctor had previously diagnosed my 8-on-a-10-pt-scale-of-pain headaches as "displaced sinus pain caused by allergies" and my other symptoms of sleeping 14 hours a day, throwing up everything I tried to eat, double vision, balance problems and not wanting(or rather being able to) go to school to "clinical depression" and being a teenager with image issues. I was prescribed multiple allergy medications, anti-depressants, and told that when having double vision, its "always good to go to an optimologist every so often". Never mind the fact that he was trained to do a standard eye exam. I visited him at LEAST 4 times throughout the 4 to 5 months prior to the MRI, which, it is important to note, was suggested by a therapist we sought out when told that I was "depressed".)))***
3 years ago tomorrow, I had the first of four brain surgeries. It was to drain the cyst, and they removed my top vertebrae and a piece of the back of my skull permanently. The piece of skull was so small and under so many layers of neck muscle that it doesn't make that much of a difference that its gone.

A week after my first surgery I had my stitches out, and then soon developed symptoms of meningitis.
The short version is, after lengthy hospital stays, a spinal tap (which, by the way, is rumored to equal the pain of child birth) I was sent home with bubbles of fluid forming on the back of my neck-- which I repeatedly brought up and were repeatedly dismissed as my imagination by my neurosurgeon.
Then one decided to pop open in the middle of the night and I went back to the ER with spinal fluid, LITERALLY, squirting from the back of my head.
I had another surgery, inserting a shunt (essentially a tube with a pressure gauge) to correctly drain my spinal fluid.
I was then diagnosed with bacterial meningitis from a staph infection, was treated with iv antibiotics over the span of about 3 weeks, had my shunt removed and then replaced on the opposite side of my head to clear all worries of the staph infection.

thats the SHORT version of the story.
I don't want pity, I joke about it now. though, it sucks to have a permanent tube in my head. Its a great conversation starter/ender though.
I've often made my first impression of people by stating "Hi! I'm Demian! I had brain surgery 4 times! Do you want to feel my tube?!"

much love to ~Soularis who is still my friend through all my ridiculous body drama.<33 and because shes willing to joke about it with me!

PS, I'm fine now, people have a tendency to ask that b its all good.
I had a minor skin infection several months after the last surgery, but again, that was all 3 years ago. I'm currently only affected by not being able to go near large magnets, speakers, or ride roller coasters.
The shunt drains into my stomach (or rather, the empty space around)
you can find out more by googling 'vp shunt' and 'hydrocephalus', which I also have.

EDIT: Another reason why I make such a big deal out of it sometimes, is because they told me after inserting the shunt that it was possible I may never write or draw the same as I used to. It is important to note that every single picture that I put my best into is a metaphorical 'Fuck You' to every doctor and nurse.. or teacher or friend or peer (believe me, there have been more than a fair few) who didn't believe me or told me that I was imagining or exaggerating my symptoms or even just pitied me.

Love the picture- the story behind it makes it all the better. I like that every piece of art is a work of defiance to a certain extent.

Wow stories like this scare the poo out of me. It shows how little doctors know and how they will dismiss symptoms and not take you seriously. I'm glad they figured it out eventually and you proved their asses wrong! WOO HOO!!!!

thanks! I'm glad you took the time to read it all, its really long xP
Yeah, I don't trust doctors as much anymore but its a good lesson on how nobody knows your body as well as you do, and not to ever let anyone tell you otherwise (: If something doesn't seem right, its never a bad thing to check it out just in case.

:]
I hate roller coasters.
Their like HUGE legal death contraptions.
A kid died recently by being under one. (Details are HARSH)
So be happy for that side effect.
How big can the magnet be? Cause that's really crazy... is there such a thing that has a huge magnet?
I like the way your drew the tumor. All evilly and such.
I don't have anything wrong with my head but I have dwarfism in my ring and pinky fingers on both hands. I mean OBVIOUSLY it doesn't effect me as much as this did you but the downfall here is that I can't wear rings or type/write/draw for long periods of time and random sharp pains...

Great job! This picture is boss (I'm jealous of your anatomy skills)

I do believe this is the longest comment I've ever written

Well I suppose I'm flattered that I got your longest comment :B
all headphones and speakers have magnets in them, the larger the speaker, the larger and stronger the magnet.. so... no standing near the speakers at concerts, large parties, etc. Also, I can't wear those huge sound blocking headphones. (which really sucks, cuz I've always wanted a pair!)
I've never been a fan of roller coasters anyways so thats not a huge deal for me. I'm not sure whether I'm allowed to fly on planes or not though.. what with the pressure changes and stuff. But then again, the cabin is always pressurized which might make it okay.
I should probably ask about that, lawl.<33
thanks for your comment and I'm glaf you like the picture!! I'm gonna be taking a life drawing class this semester so hopefully my anatomy skills will improve even more!

I probably could have sued him but at the time we had more important things to think about xP

He awkwardly visited me in the hospital once. It was full of lovely awkward silence and him refusing to look me in the eye. what a douche.

Though it may not be due to him, the fact that you were finally properly diagnosed and treated is a good one. :]

The cyst in the picture looks like some creepy child molestor, it's amusing that it has a personality ^.^
Arachnoid cysts sounds like a bitch, but it appears that they inspire a very pretty piece of art, such as this one

Oh wow that's intense. I'm amused though it's called an "arachnoid" cyst. Like... brain spiders that eat your brain? Also, the photo with the stitches, that actually looks kinda cool ¬_¬

I like the moon(?) halo disk :3

Lesmau In reply to thederangedsidekick [2008-07-13 19:24:15 +0000 UTC]

thankya!

yes, an arachnoid cyst isn't hard like a tumor its more of like a water balloon, except instead of water its filled with spinal fluid and instead of a balloon its some of the protective layers that cover your brain.
theres one layer called the arachnoid, I think, because it vaguely resembles a spider web and thats the layer that got folded over/twisted up or whatever and started trapping the spinal fluid.
and yes, its a moon halo disk thing. I've got a thing for halo disk things, and the moon. :B

When they let me out of the hospital I had fun wearing my hair up so that everyone could see the stitches, and then I went in very public places like the grocery store and scared old ladies.
